Operating in Warm Temperature Climates
Isuzu engines are designed to operate using
recommended engine coolants.
Always use a recommended engine coolant, even when
operating in geographical areas where freeze protection
is not required.
IMPORTANT: Water may be used as coolant in
emergency situations only.
Foaming, hot surface aluminum and iron
corrosion, scaling, and cavitation occur when
water is used as the coolant, even when
coolant conditioners are added.
Drain cooling system and rell with
recommended engine coolant as soon
as possible.
Testing Coolant Freeze Point
The use of a handheld coolant refractometer is the
quickest, easiest, and most accurate method to determine
coolant freeze point. This method is more accurate than
a test strip or a oat-type hydrometer which can produce
poor results.
A coolant refractometer is available through an authorized
Hitachi dealer under the SERVICEGARD™ tool program.
Part number 75240 provides an economical solution to
accurate freeze point determination in the eld.
To use this tool:
1. Allow cooling system to cool to ambient temperatures.
2. Open radiator cap to expose coolant.
3. With the included dropper, collect a small coolant
sample.
4. Open the lid of the refractometer, place one drop of
coolant on the window and close the lid.
5. Look through the eyepiece and focus as necessary.
6. Record the listed freeze point for the type of coolant
(ethylene glycol coolant or propylene glycol) being
tested.
