CUTTING AIDS

Cuttingaids are usedto improvethe setup and help
make the operator'sworksafer end more accurate.
They can be made fromscrap woodand invarious
sizes and shapes forspecificprojects,
The basic typesare pushsticks,pushblocks,and
featherboards.If the blade isset 2 in. or morefrom
the fence, use a pushstick.Use a pushblockwhen the
blade isbetween 1/2 in. and 2 in.from the fence. (If
the cutisnarrowerthan 1/2 in., usea differentsaw.)
Refer to the drawingsand instructionsprovidedso
you san make saferand more precisecuts.
PUSHSTICKS

Pushsticksmustbe narrowerthan theworkpiece,with
a 90"notchin one end and shapedfor a gripon the
otherend.

A pushblockhas an uprighthandle with a base
attachedtothe handle. Some pushblockshavea foot
thatextends downfromthe base and againstthe
workpiece.The foot isattached to the basewith glue
onlytoprevent damage tothe blade.
FEATHERBOARDS
See Figure41.
Featherboardsare used for largepanels, along with
an auxiliary table and a C-clamp. A featharboardhas
an angled end to fitagainstthe edge of theworkplace.
It isclamped in place sothe workpiecemoves be-
tween eitherthe fence and the featherb6hrdor the
table and featherboard. Slotsin the end of the
faatharboardhelp resist kickbackand allowfor
variationsinthe widthofthe workplace.
_1= WARNING: Clamp the featherboardagainstthe
infeedside of theworkpiece. Ifclamped behind
the blade, itcouldsqueeze the cutedges
together,causing bindingand kickback.Kickback
can cause seriousinjury.
