causesnoknownadversehealtheffects.ManystudiesoflowlevelRFexposureshave
notfoundanybiologicaleffects.Somestudieshavesuggestedthatsomebiological
effectsmayoccur,butsuchfindingshavenotbeenconfirmedbyadditionalresearch.
Insomecases,otherresearchershavehaddifficultyinreproducingthosestudies,orin
determiningthereasonsforinconsistentresults.
2. What is the FDAs role concerning the safety of wireless
phones?
Underthelaw,theFDAdoesnotreviewthesafetyofradiation-emittingconsumer
productssuchaswirelessphonesbeforetheycanbesold,asitdoeswithnewdrugs
ormedicaldevices.However,theagencyhasauthoritytotakeactionifwireless
phonesareshowntoemitradiofrequencyenergy(RF)atalevelthatishazardousto
theuser.Insuchacase,theFDAcouldrequirethemanufacturersofwirelessphones
tonotifyusersofthehealthhazardandtorepair,replace,orrecallthephonessothat
thehazardnolongerexists.
AlthoughtheexistingscientificdatadonotjustifyFDAregulatoryactions,theFDAhas
urgedthewirelessphoneindustrytotakeanumberofsteps,includingthefollowing:

SupportneededresearchintopossiblebiologicaleffectsofRFofthetypeemittedby
wirelessphones;

DesignwirelessphonesinawaythatminimizesanyRFexposuretotheuserthatis
notnecessaryfordevicefunction;and

Cooperateinprovidingusersofwirelessphoneswiththebestpossibleinformation
onpossibleeffectsofwirelessphoneuseonhumanhealth.
