Virtual CINEMA DSP
YAMAHA has developed a Virtual CINEMA DSP
algorithm Ihat allows you 1o enjoy DSP sound field
surround effects even without any surround speakers by
using virtual sun'ound speakers.
It is even possible 1o enjoy Virtual CINEMA DSP using a
minimal two-speaker system thai does not include a center
speaker.
Composite Video signal
With the composite video signal system, the video signal
is composed of three basic elements of a video picture;
color, brightness and synehronizalion data. A composite
video jack on a video component transmits these three
elements combined.
S VIDEO signal
With the S VIDEO signal system, the video signal
normally transmitted using a pin cable is separated and
transmitted as the Y signal for the luminance and the C
signal for the chrominance through the S VIDEO cable.
Using the S VIDEO jack eliminates video signal
transmission loss and allows recording and playback of
even more beautiful images.

Component video signal
With the component video signal system, the video signal
is separated into the Y signal for the luminance and the P_
and P[_ signals for the ehrominance. Color can be
reproduced more faithfully with this syslem because each
of these signals is independent. The component signal is
also called lhe "color difference signal" because the
luminance signal is sublracted from the color signal.
A monitor with component input jacks is required in order
to use the component signal for output.
PCM (Linear PCM)
Linear PCM is a signal format under which an analog
audio signal is digitized, recorded and transmitted without
using any compression. This is used as a method of
recording CDs and DVD audio. The PCM system uses a
technique for sampling the size of the analog signal per
very small unit of time. Standing for "pulse code
modulation", the analog signal is encoded as pulses and
then modulated for recording.
Sampling frequency and number of
quantized bits
When digitizing an analog audio signal, Ihe number of
times the signal is sampled per second is called the
sampling frequency, while the degree of fineness when
converting the sound level inlo a numeric value is called
the number of quantized bits.
The range of rates that can be played back is determined
based on the sampling rate, while the dynamic range
representing the sound level difference is determined by
the number of quantized bits. In principle, the higher lhe
sampling frequency, the wider the range of frequencies
that can be played back, and the higher the number of
quantized bits, the more finely the sound level can be
reproduced.
THX Cinema processing
THX is an exclusive set of standards and technologies
established by the world-renowned film production
company, Lueasfihn Ltd. THX grew from George Lucas'
personal desire Io make your experience of the fihn
soundtrack, in both movie theatres and in your home
theatre, as faithful as possible to what the director
intended.
Movie soundtracks are mixed in special movie theatres
called dubbing stages and are designed to be played back
in movie theatres with similar equipment and conditions.
This same soundtrack is then transferred direclly omo
Laserdisc, VHS tape, DVD, etc., and is not changed for
playback in a small home theatre environment.
THX engineers developed patented technologies 1o
accurately translate 1he sound from the movie theatre
environment inlo 1he home, correcting the tonal and
spatial errors that occur. On this product, when the THX
indicator is on, THX fealures are automatically added in
Cinema modes (e.g. THX Cinema, THX Surround EXt.
Re-Equalization
The lonal balance of a fihn soundtrack will be excessively
bright and harsh when played back over audio equipment
in the home because fihn soundtracks were designed to be
played back in large movie theatres using very different
professional equipment. Re-Equalization restores the
correct lonal balance for watching a movie soundtrack in a
small home environment.
Timbre Matching
The human ear changes our perception of a sound
depending on the direction from which the sound is
coming. In a movie theatre, there is an array of sun'ound
speakers so that the surround information is all around
you. In a home theatre, you use only two speakers located
to the side of your head. The Timbre Matching feature
filters the information going to the surround speakers so
that they more closely match lhe tonal characteristics of
the sound coming from 1he front speakers. This ensures
seamless panning between the front and surround
speakers.
