Corn Dog Waffle Sticks
This un-fried version of a corn dog is fun and
easy to make at home. We recommend dipping
these in ketchup or mustard.
Makes 12 waffle sticks
3 hot dogs
¾ cup yellow cornmeal
¾ cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1½ tablespoon granulated sugar
1½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1. Cut the hot dogs in half lengthwise and then again
in half crosswise so that you have 12 pieces.
2. In a large bowl, put the cornmeal, flour, sugar,
baking powder, baking soda, and salt; whisk
to combine. In a medium bowl, whisk together
the buttermilk, egg, and butter. Add the wet
ingredients to the dry ingredients, and stir
until smooth. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes.
3. Preheat the waffle iron on setting 4. The waffle
maker’s ready light will illuminate green to
indicate it is ready to use.
4. Pour about ½ cup batter onto the center of
the lower grid; spread the batter using a
heatproof spatula to within ½ inch of the edge
of the grid. Lay six of the the hot dog halves
parallel in the waffle iron so that they line up in
the waffle stick grid. Add about another ¼ cup
of batter to cover the hot dogs. Close the
waffle iron lid; the green indicator light will
turn off. When the green indicator light turns
on again, the waffle sticks are ready. Open the
lid and carefully remove the baked waffle.
Break apart into individual waffle sticks and
serve immediately.
5. Repeat with the remaining batter and hot dogs.
Note: To make fun and nearly authentic corn dogs, serve
the Corn Dog Waffle Sticks on wooden popsicle sticks.
