Advanced user tips

Use the Orion Studio Synergy Core as a Master clock

We recommend taking advantage of the Orion Studio Synergy Core’s highly stable and

musical clocking, provided by an oven-controlled crystal oscillator and proprietary 64-bit

algorithms (Acoustically Focused Clocking & Jitter Management) to generate timing

reference for other digital audio devices in your setup.

This is done in a Master - Slave arrangement where the Master device "clocks" the Slave

device with its timing reference signal. To set up the Orion Studio Synergy Core as a

Master clock, connect Word Clock Out to the Slave device's Word Clock In using a

standard BNC cable. Orion Studio does not require any specific setup, but the receiving

device might require modifying its settings to act as a Slave.

Send and receive CV (Control Voltage) commands to Eurorack

modular synths

At the time of release, Orion Studio Synergy Core is the sole professional audio interface

featuring complete DC-coupled analog I/O. This makes it capable of sending and receiving

CV (Control Voltage) commands to analog synthesizers.

CV is especially prominent inside the realm of ‘modular’ synths, more specifically those

comprised of modules made in the exceedingly popular Eurorack format. The individual

modules (e.g. VCO, VCA, VCF, LFO, ADSR) within such a system communicate primarily

through Direct Current (DC) patch points as opposed to Alternating Current (AC), with

control voltage carried over patch cables. That’s because AC-coupling filters out ultra-

low frequencies, including the types of sustained voltage used in modular synthesis.

Eurorack owners are fond of integrating their modular systems with Ableton Live. The free

CV Tools extension makes it possible to send and receive CV commands as if they were

regular audio streams inside the DAW, which is a

particularly straightforward workflow.

The Orion Studio Synergy Core’s wealth of analog I/O, all DC-coupled, provides ample

room to control modular synths.
