Quick Guide
Connecting to Other Devices
Connecting Headphones
Connect a pair of headphones to the [PHONES/
OUTPUT]/[PHONES] jack on the rear panel.
The built-in speakers are automatically shut off when
a plug is inserted into this jack.
Connecting an External Device
This jack also functions as an external output. By
connecting to a computer, keyboard amplifier,
recorder, or other audio device, you can output the
audio signal of this instrument to that external device.
The speakers of this instrument are automatically
shut off when a plug is inserted into this jack.
Yo u can produce a natural sustain as you play by
pressing a footswitch (FC5 or FC4A; sold separately)
plugged into the [SUSTAIN] jack. Although the foot-
switch works as the Sustain pedal for most Voices, it
features other functions such as Sostenuto and
Arpeggio Hold (for Voices 290–339). One of these
functions can be assigned to the footswitch on the
Fu nction display (page 70).
Before connecting the instrument to external devices, turn off the power of all the devices. Also, before turning the power on or
off, make sure to set all volume levels to minimum. Otherwise, damage to the devices or electrical shock may occur.
CAUTION
Connecting Headphones or an
External Device
Do not use the headphones for a long period of time at a
high or uncomfortable volume level, since this can cause
permanent hearing loss.
To avoid possible damage to the external device, first turn
on the power to the instrument, then to the external
device. When turning off the power, do so in reverse order:
first turn off the power to the external device, then to the
instrument.

CAUTION
NOTICE
Connecting a Footswitch to the
SUSTAIN jack
When Split is on, the sustain function does not affect the cur-
rent Split Voice (page 20) while sostenuto and Arpeggio Hold
(page 56) affect only the current Split Voice.
Plug or unplug the footswitch while the power is off. Also, do
not press the footswitch when turning the power on. Doing so
changes the polarity of the footswitch, resulting in reversed
operation.
Some Voices may sound continuously or have a long decay
after the notes have been released while the footswitch is
held.
