1. Do wireless phones pose a health hazard?
Theavailablescienticevidencedoesnotshowthatanyhealthproblemsare
associatedwithusingwirelessphones.Thereisnoproof,however,thatwireless
phonesareabsolutelysafe.WirelessphonesemitlowlevelsofRadioFrequency
(RF)energyinthemicrowaverangewhilebeingused.Theyalsoemitverylow
levelsofRFwheninstandbymode.WhereashighlevelsofRFcanproduce
healtheffects(byheatingtissue),exposuretolowlevelRFthatdoesnot
produceheatingeffectscausesnoknownadversehealtheffects.Manystudies
oflowlevelRFexposureshavenotfoundanybiologicaleffects.Somestudies
havesuggestedthatsomebiologicaleffectsmayoccur,butsuchndingshave
notbeenconrmedbyadditionalresearch.Insomecases,otherresearchers
havehaddifcultyinreproducingthosestudies,orindeterminingthereasons
forinconsistentresults.
2. What is the FDAs role concerning the safety of wireless phones?
Underthelaw,theFDAdoesnotreviewthesafetyofradiation-emitting
consumerproductssuchaswirelessphonesbeforetheycanbesold,asit
doeswithnewdrugsormedicaldevices.However,theagencyhasauthority
totakeactionifwirelessphonesareshowntoemitRadioFrequency(RF)
energyatalevelthatishazardoustotheuser.Insuchacase,theFDAcould
requirethemanufacturersofwirelessphonestonotifyusersofthehealth
hazardandtorepair,replace,orrecallthephonessothatthehazardno
longerexists.
