RadioFrequency(RF)energyfromwirelessphonescaninteractwithsome
electronicdevices.Forthisreason,theFDAhelpeddevelopadetailed
testmethodtomeasureElectroMagneticInterference(EMI)ofimplanted
cardiacpacemakersanddebrillatorsfromwirelesstelephones.Thistest
methodisnowpartofastandardsponsoredbytheAssociationforthe
AdvancementofMedicalInstrumentation(AAMI).Thenaldraft,ajoint
effortbytheFDA,medicaldevicemanufacturers,andmanyothergroups,
wascompletedinlate2000.Thisstandardwillallowmanufacturersto
ensurethatcardiacpacemakersanddebrillatorsaresafefromwireless
phoneEMI.
TheFDAhastestedhearingaidsforinterferencefromhandheldwireless
phonesandhelpeddevelopavoluntarystandardsponsoredbytheInstitute
ofElectricalandElectronicEngineers(IEEE).Thisstandardspeciestest
methodsandperformancerequirementsforhearingaidsandwireless
phonessothatnointerferenceoccurswhenapersonusesa“compatible
phoneanda“compatiblehearingaidatthesametime.Thisstandardwas
approvedbytheIEEEin2000.
TheFDAcontinuestomonitortheuseofwirelessphonesforpossible
interactionswithothermedicaldevices.Shouldharmfulinterferencebe
foundtooccur,theFDAwillconducttestingtoassesstheinterferenceand
worktoresolvetheproblem.
