Neverstorelawntractorwithfuel in tankindoorsor in poorly
ventilatedareaswherefuelfumesmay reachan open flame,spark,
or pilotlight as on a furnace,waterheater,clothesdryer,orgas
appliance.
PREPARING THE ENGINE
iMPORTANT:Fuelleft inthe fuel tankduringwarmweatherdeterio-
ratesandwill causeseriousstartingproblems.
Gasolineis a toxicsubstance.Disposeof gasolineproperly.Contact
yourlocal authoritiesfor approveddisposal methods.
Failureto usea fuel stabilizingadditiveorcompletelyrunthe engine
until it's out of fuel beforeoff-seasonstoragemay resultin damageto
yourengine'scarburetor.Subsequentdamagewouldnot be covered
underthe manufacturer'swarranty.
Enginesstoredbetween30 and 90 daysneed to betreatedwitha
gasolinestabilizerandenginesstoredover90 daysneedto bedrained
of fuelto preventdeteriorationandgum fromformingin fuel systemor
onessentialcarburetorparts. Ifthe gasolinein yourenginedeterio-
ratesduringstorage,you may needto havethe carburetor,andother
fuel systemcomponents,servicedor replaced.
Topreventgum depositsfrom forminginsidethe engine'scarburetor
andcausingpossiblemalfunctionof the engine,the fuel systemmust
beeithercompletelyemptied,or thegasolinemustbe treatedwith a
stabilizerto preventdeterioration.
1. If usingafuel stabilizer:
a. Readthe productmanufacturer'sinstructionsand recom-
mendations.
b. Add to clean,freshgasolinethe correctamountof stabilizer
forthe capacityof the fuel system.
c. Fillthe fuel tankwith treatedfueland runthe enginefor 2-3
minutesto get stabilizedfuel intothe carburetor.
2. If emptyingthefuel system:
a. Do notdrainfuel whenthe engineis hot.Allowtheengine
adequatetimeto cool. Drainfuel intoan approvedcontainer
outdoors,awayfromopenflame.
b. Drainanylargevolumeof fuelfromthe tankby disconnect-
ingthe fuel linefromthe in-linefuelfilter near theengine.
Seethecompleteinstructionsfor DrainingThe Fuellater in
thissection.
Gasolineis extremelyflammableandcan be explosiveundercertain
conditions.Draingasolinebeforestoringthe equipmentfor extended
periods.Drainfuelonly intoan approvedcontaineroutdoors,away
fromanopen flame.Allow engineto cool. Extinguishcigarettes,
cigars,pipes,andothersourcesof ignitionpriorto drainingfuel.
Storegasolinein anapprovedcontainerin safelocation.
c. Reconnectthe fuellineand runtheengineuntilit startsto
falter,then usethe choketo keepthe engine runninguntilall
fuel in the carburetorhas beenexhausted.
d. Disconnectthe fuel line and drain anyremaininggasoline
fromthe system.

3. Removethesparkplug and pour one (1)ounceof engineoil
throughthe spark plug holeinto thecylinder.Crankthe engine
severaltimes todistributethe oil. Replacethe sparkplug.
4. Cleandebrisfromaroundengine,underfingerguard,and under,
aroundandbehindmuffler.Touchupany damagedpaint,and
coatotherareasthatmayrustwitha light filmof oil.
5. Storeina clean, dry andwellventilatedareaawayfromany ap-
pliancethatoperateswith a flameor pilotlight,such as afurnace,
waterheater,or clothesdryer.Alsoavoidanyareawith a spark
producingelectricmotor,or wherepowertoolsare operated.
6. If possible,alsoavoidstorageareaswith highhumidity,because
thatpromotesrust and corrosion.
7. Keepthe enginelevelin storage.Tiltingcan causefuel oroil
leakage.
DRAINING THE FUEL
1. Locatethefuel filter,which islocatedon the leftside of the
engine,andmay be attachedto theenginewitha tie strap.
2. Cut the tie strap,if present,thenpinch thein-lineclampon the
fuel filterwith a pair of pliers,slidethe clampup thefuel line.
3. Pull thefuel linefree fromthe filterandplacethe openend of the
lineintoan approvedcontainerto drainthe fuel.
PREPARING THE LAWN TRACTOR
1. Cleanand lubricatethe unit thoroughlyas describedin the
Lubricationinstructionsin the ServiceandMaintenancesection.
2. Do not usea pressurewasheror garden hoseto cleanyourunit.
3. Storemowerina dry,cleanarea. Donot storenextto corrosive
materials,suchas fertilizer.
Removing From Storage
1. Checktheoil levelas describedin the Assemblysectionof this
manual.
2. If thefuel wasdrainedduringstoragepreparation,fill the tankwith
freshgasoline.If youkeepa containerof gasolinefor refueling,
makecertainitcontainsonlyfreshfuel.Gasolineoxidizesand
deterioratesovertime,causinghardstarting.
3. If thecylinderwascoatedwith oil duringstoragepreparation,the
enginewill smokebrieflyat startup.Thisis normal.
