You need an XM receiver in addition to the radio being XM ready.

#2 Is the screen easy to see in the daylight?

Depends on the color you select for display

#3 Does is support regular fm / am radio?

Yes it does support radio but the bluetooth doesn't talk to my new Droid Moto Z phone so be very careful if you're expecting bluetooth like I was.

#4 Does this unit allow for a white background with the black lettering? I want to be able to see the display with my convertibile top down in my car.

Yes. You can change the button colors separately from the display color as well buy selecting custom color. I drive a Jeep with the top down and have no problem seeing the display.
