background
Providing Fail-Safe Performance
Fire doors and shutters are found in virtually all types
of commercial buildings including manufacturing
facilities, warehouses, hospitals, stadiums, sports
arenas, convention centers and food court areas. They
serve as physical barriers to stop the spread of re and
smoke from one area to another. LiftMaster
®
release
devices enhance the performance of these safety
barriers by controlling the closure of the re doors
upon receipt of a signal from a smoke detector, heat
detector or building re alarm system. The devices
are an integral part of the door or shutters fusible link
release assembly, providing fail-safe performance.
Ultimately, LiftMaster
®
release devices are designed
to minimize property damage and provide increased
safety for all building occupants. They provide a
time-delayed release of the door for a period of up to
60 seconds to permit passageway clearance prior to
door closure. Optional Battery Backup can ensure the
door will not be released as a result of power failure (in
non-alarm conditions) for up to 72 hours. For added
safety of individuals in or around the opening, a voice
annunciator, strobe or horn notication device can be
installed to provide a verbal, visual or auditory warning
message prior to door closure.

LM21XPBB Extended Performance Release Device
Functions as Localized Fire Alarm System
The XP release device provides a fail-safe release mechanism for non-motorized doors and acts as an interface
between the door and re alarm system. The device requires 24VDC power from an approved UL1481 regulated
power supply with Battery Backup, such as a re alarm control panel. Therefore, installation will require
coordination with a re panel installer. Features include:
Versatility allows the XPBB release device to operate on 120VAC, 24VAC, or 24VDC power sources. Internal
Battery Backup allows the release device to stand-alone from the re alarm system and act independently in
the event of a power outage. The system can provide 24VDC power for up to 4 smoke detectors and 2 horn
strobes, mounted on either side of the door. Programmable delay settings, close door detection, diagnostic
LEDs, localized testing and reset capabilities are all also standard. Features include:
UL864 Revision 9 Compliant
Programmable DIP Switch delay setting - either 10, 20, 30, or 60 seconds delay of
door release to permit passage clearance
Inputs for normally open 2- or 4-wire detectors and 4-wire normally closed detectors
Trouble and alarm relays for communication with the re alarm control panel, if required
Audible trouble sounder to indicate when the release device is not operational

door release to permit passageway clearance
Close door detection – Prevents door release if the door is kept in the closed
position and eliminates door reset service calls or potential system damage
On board diagnostic LEDs for early trouble shooting
Testing function allows routine re door testing without requiring activation of the
central alarm system; easy reset function returns the device to a standby state
LM21AFCB Advance Fire Control Release Device
For Fully Automated Door Operation
The AFCB release device is designed to be used in conjuction with a standard commercial door operator to
provide a fully automated door closing system. For use with motorized doors incorporating a reversing electric
safety edge. This 120VAC device can power up to 4 smoke detectors and 2 horn/strobes or speaker strobes.
This system combines state-of-the-art functionality and advanced features typically found on special-order re
door operators. Features include:

Each LiftMaster
®
Fire Door Release Device serves as an interface between the smoke detection system
and re door. As the central control, the re door release system receives and interprets all signals to
instruct the re door and all warning devices to act appropriately.
LiftMaster
®
offers a choice of 3 different models, FOR BOTH MOTORIZED AND NON-MOTORIZED
APPLICATIONS. For motorized applications, the appropriate release device works in conjunction with a
standard, commercial electromechanical or solid-state operator to create an enhanced, yet economical,
re door operating system. All devices ensure the continued protection and code compliance for the re
door or shutter by enabling routine operation inspections without activating the primary alarm system
and without disturbing building occupants. These devices are C-UL-US, FM and CSFM listed and are
compliant with the NFPA 80 requirement for a fail-safe door holder/release device.

Accessories
Liftmaster
®
Fire Door Release Devices offer a choice of accessories and options that provide added
features and exibility to upgrade your system.
Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors can be used to provide a local alarm signal that activates the release
device. Three types of detectors are available: Photoelectric (available in 12/24VDC
in 2 or 4-wire congurations or 120VAC in 4-wire congurations only), Photo-thermal
detectors (available in 12/24VDC in 2- or 4- wire congurations or 120VAC in 4-wire
congurations only) or Ion detectors (available in 120VAC 4-wire congurations only).
Photoelectric detectors are best suited to detect slow, smoldering res while Ion
detectors are best suited to detect fast aming res. Each type of detector can identify
both types of res, but response times may vary slightly. A re alarm system design
engineer should be consulted for the most suitable choice for a given installation.
Notication Devices
Notication devices provide a visual and/or audible warning notication. Available types
include a stand-alone horn, stand-alone strobes or a combination horn/strobe. Each type
is available in 12VDC, 24VDC or 120VAC. All notication devices are ADA-Compliant.
Speaker/Strobe
An audible/visible notication device used in conjunction with the optional Voice Board.
The speaker/strobe is available in 12VDC, 24VDC or 120VAC. A stand-alone speaker is
also available. All speaker strobes are ADA-Compliant.
Heat Detectors
Heat detectors provide an alarm signal that activates the release device when the
ambient temperature reaches a xed point; available in xed temperatures of 135 and
194 degrees F.

VB - Voice Board
A solid-state speech module, the optional VB may be ordered factory-installed within
the XPBB or AFCB models or purchased separately for retro-t possibilities. In an
alarm condition, the VB will provide a warning tone followed by a voice message/
warning prior to door closure. The VB can be used with up to 2 speaker strobes or
stand-alone speakers.
Options
Transformer
Used in conjunction with an AFCB model when line voltages other than 120VAC are
present at the door installation. Transformers are mounted within an UL508 approved
enclosure and are available in the following two options:
• 90-TRNSFRMR-2 (208VAC 1/3 Phase, 230/460VAC 3 phase)
• 90-TRNSFRMR-5 (575VAC 3 Phase)
FDR Plug-In Option Card
For use in conjunction with the LiftMaster
®
Logic 3-equipped operator; the FDRCARD
facilitates eld connections between the LM21AFCB and the operator by reducing the
standard 10-wire interconnection to a basic 4-wire phone cord. Both the FDRCARD and
the AFCB are equipped with an RJ-11 phone jack as standard to accept the phone cord.
The FDRCARD also eliminates the need for ordering the operator with auxiliary open
and close limits, which are required for all non-Logic 3 operators.
