1. DEE=RANCHING
a. Always debranch a tree after it is cut down.
Only then can debranchingbe done safelyand
properly.
b. Leavethelargerlowerlimbstosupportthe
tree as you work,
c. Start at the base ofthe felled tree and work
towards the top, cuffing [0ranches and
limbs. Remove small limbswithone cut. Fig-
ure32.
d. Keep the tree between you and the chain.
Cut from the side of the tree opposite the
branch youare cutting_
e. Remove larger, supporting branches with
the 113,2/3 cutting techniques described in
the bucking section.
1.) Start with an undercut.
2.) Finishwithanovercut.
f. Always use an overcut to cut small and
freely hanging limbs. Undercutting could
cause limbstofall andpinchthesaw.
2. PRUNING
a. Limit pruning to limbs shoulder he_ht or
below. Do notcut ifbranchesare higherthan
your shoulder. Get a professionalto do the
job.
b. Refer to Figure 33 for the pruning tech-
nique.
1.) Underc0t 1/3 of the way'through the limb
nearthe trunkof the tree.
2.) Finish with an overcut farther outfrom the
trunk.
3.) Keep outofthewayofthefallinglimb.
4.) Cut the stump flush near thetrunkofthe
tree.

A good maintenance program of regular inspec-
tion and care wil_ increase the service life and
help to maintain the safety and performance of
your saw.
Check the saw for loose bolts, screws, nuts
and fittings reguladyo Loose fasteners cari
cause an unsafe condition as well as damage
to your saw.
e Mpke all adjustments or repairs (except car.
buretor adjustments) with:
.spark plug wire disconnected
--engine cool as opposed to a unit that has
JUstbeen run.

1. CHAIN MAINTENANCE
e Sharpen the chain when:
--wood chips are small and powdery. Wood
chips made by the saw chain should be
about the size of the teeth of the chain.
--saw has to be forced through the cut.
--saw cuts to one side.

1.) Stop engine.
2.) Adjust the chain for proper tension, see
"Chain Tension"section.
3.) Work at the midpoint of the bar, moving
the chain fol'ward by hand aS each cut-
ter is filed.
