c. Leave enough uncut Wood between the felling
cut and thenotchtoform a hinge.Figure 26.
NOTE: The hinge helps to keep the tree from
twisting and falling inthe wrongdirection.
d, Use a wedge if there is any chance that the
tree wiltnot fall inthe desireddirection.
NOTE: Beforethe felling cut iscomplete, drive
wedgestoopenup thecutwhennecessarytocon-
trolthedirectionoffall. Usewoodorpfasticwedges
but never metal, to avoid kickback and chain
damage
e. Be alert forsigns thatthe treeis ready tofall:

f. As the tree starts to fall, stop the saw; put it
down, and get away quickly on your planned
retreatpath.

avoidinjury, do not cut down a partially fallen tree

Stay on the uphill side of the terrain to avoid the
tree rolling or sliding downhill after itisfelled,
C; "BUCKING
Bucking isthe term used for cutting a fallen
tree to the desired logsize.
1. IMPORTANTPOINTS
a. Cut only one log at a time,
b. Cut shatteredwood very carefully.Sharppieces
of woodcould be flung towardthe operator.
c. Use a sawhorse to cut small 10gs.Never allow
anotherperson to hold the log while cuttingand
never holdthe log with your leg or foot.
Give special attention to logs under strain to
prevent the saw from pinching. Make the first
cut on the pressure side to relieve the slress on
the log Figure 27.
Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs and
roots are tangled such as in a blown down
area, Dragthe/ogs into a clear area beforecut-
_ingbypuUingout exposedand clearedlogsfirst.
f. Make the first bucking Cut 113 of the way
through the tog and finish with a 2/3 cut on
the opposite side. Asthe logis beingcut, itwill
tend to bend. The Saw can become pinchedor
hung In the log if you make the first cut deeper
than 1/3of the diameter ofthe log.
