selecting wood
8.4 starting a fi re (damper open)
Remove all sources of gasoline or other fl ammable vapours and liquids in the vicinity of this or other
appliances prior to lighting.
Use Solid wood, processed solid fi re logs (or other specifi ed type) fuel only.
Use plenty of newspaper and kindling to ensure the appliance quickly reaches a proper temperature. Once the
kindling is burning rapidly, place a few larger pieces of wood onto the fi re.
A. To start, a brisk fi re is required.
Roll up some newspaper
(loosely crumpled), light it and
place it near the appliance fl ue
until the chimney begins to
draw.
B. Cover with dry kindling. C. Light the paper and when the
kindling is burning add more fuel.
Draft is the force which moves air from the appliance up through the chimney. The amount of draft in your chimney de-
pends on the length of the chimney, local geography, nearby obstructions and other forces.
Inadequate draft may cause back-puffi ng into the room and may cause plugging of the chimney. Too much draft may
cause an excessive temperature in the appliance, glowing red appliance parts or an uncontrollable burn which can all
lead to a chimney fi re or a permanent damage to the appliance.
Max fuel load 60lbs (27kg).
Max fuel height, halfway up the fi rebox or to the top of the fi rst rebrick.

WARNING
When fi rst lighting a fi re, if the smoke is not quickly drawn into the chimney, there may be a downdraft or cold
air in the chimney. By fi rst burning large amounts of crumpled newspaper, the chimney will get heated causing
the smoke to quickly vent up the chimney.
