5.2.5.5. Arpeggios and Chord Mode
The KeyStep Pro can memorize a chord. You can then play an entire chord simply by
pressing a single key on the keyboard. The chord will transpose automatically as you play
different notes.
It's a feature that adds a new dimension to the concept of an arpeggio. Chord mode enables
you to create blindingly fast and intricate polyphonic scale-quantized arpeggios; you'll hear
arpeggios as you've never heard them before — maybe not even in your wildest dreams!
CAUTION: The following procedure will erase the previous chord and replace it with a new one.
Here's how to memorize a chord:
Hold down the 'Shift' button and press the Tie/Rest/Chord button. Don't let go!
Once you've entered the first note of the chord, you can let go of the 'Shift' button
Now play up to 16 notes on the keyboard. These will become your chord
When you are done, lift all your fingers off the keyboard and then release the
'Shift' and Tie/Rest/Chord buttons.
Now the Chord button will flash once per second, showing that the KeyStep Pro is in Chord
mode. The next single key you press will play the chord you created.
When creating a chord, the KeyStep Pro does not look at the actual notes you play, it
registers the distance in half steps between the notes you enter and the order in which you
enter the notes. When you play back the chord, it will reconstruct the chord starting at the
first note you play on the keyboard.
Now you're ready to play complex arpeggiated chords:
Select an arpeggio pattern by holding down 'Shift' and pressing one of the Arp
Pattern keys
Memorize a chord, as you have just learned to
Press the Play button.
Other fun things to try:
Select another Time Division to hear your arpeggiated chord at different speeds.
Select another Scale to quantize the notes in your arpeggio to a predefined (or
user) scale.
!: Unless you have huge hands that can span half the keyboard, it's a good idea to press HOLD before
attempting the above tips.
