#1 Will this unit play my tvs audio like a surround sound unit?

Yes by two different methods
1) if your TV supports HDMI, and you are using a HDMI cable to connect to the receiver then the ARC (audio return channel) in the HDMI cable provides the audio to the receiver.
2) if you TV doesn't have HDMI but a audio output jack(s) (either RCA or 3.5mm phone jacks) then with the appropriate cable you can connect to the audio in on the receiver.
