SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE
WARNING
Before performing any maintenance or repairs, disengage the PTO, move
the drive control levers fully outward in the neutral position, engage the
parking brake, stop the engine and remove the key to prevent unintended
starting.
Engine Maintenance
Refer to the Engine Operators Manual for all engine maintenance procedures and
instructions.
Changing the Engine Oil
WARNING
If the engine has been recently run, the engine, muffler and surrounding
metal surfaces will be hot and can cause burns to the skin. Exercise caution
to avoid burns.
To complete an oil change, proceed as follows:
1. Run the engine for a short time to warm the engine oil. The oil will flow more
freely and carry away more impurities. Use care to avoid burns from hot oil.
2. Locate the oil drain hose on the right side of the engine. See Figure 16.

3. Route the free end of the oil drain hose toward an appropriate oil collection
container with at least a 2.5 quart capacity, to collect the used oil. Remove
the oil fill cap/dipstick from the oil fill tube.
4. While holding the free end of the oil drain hose over the oil collection
container, unscrew the square head hose plug from the end of the hose. See
Figure 16. Drain the engine oil into the collection container.
5. Route the free end of the oil drain hose toward an appropriate oil collection
container with at least a 2.5 quart capacity, to collect the used oil.
6. Once the oil has finished draining, replace the square head hose plug and fill
the engine as instructed in the engine owner’s manual. See engine owners
manual included with this riding mower for oil capacity.
Hydrostatic Transmission
The hydrostatic transmission is sealed at the factory and is maintenance-free. The
fluid level cannot be checked and the fluid cannot be changed.
Battery
WARNING
California PROPOSITION 65 WARNING! Battery posts, terminals,
and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals
known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm.
Wash hands after handling.
The battery is sealed and is maintenance-free. Acid levels cannot be checked and
fluid can not be added.
Always keep the battery cables and terminals clean and free of corrosive
build-up.
After cleaning the battery and terminals, apply a light coat of petroleum jelly
or grease to both terminals.
CAUTION
If removing the battery for cleaning, disconnect the NEGATIVE (Black) wire
from its terminal first, followed by the POSITIVE (Red) wire. When re-
installing the battery, always connect the POSITIVE (Red) wire its terminal
first, followed by the NEGATIVE (Black) wire. Be certain that the wires are
connected to the correct terminals; reversing them could result in serious
damage to your engine’s alternating system.
Cleaning the Riding Mower
Any fuel or oil spilled on the machine should be wiped off promptly. Do NOT allow
debris to accumulate around the cooling fins of the engine, the transmission’s
cooling fan or on any other part of the machine, especially the belts and pulleys.
Using the Deck Wash System
Your riding mower’s deck is equipped with a water port on its surface as part of its
deck wash system.
Use the deck wash to rinse grass clippings from the decks underside and prevent the
buildup of corrosive chemicals. Complete the following steps AFTER EACH MOWING:
1. Drive the riding mower to a level, clear spot on your lawn, near enough for
your garden hose to reach.
CAUTION
Make certain the riding mowers discharge chute is directed AWAY from
your house, garage, parked cars, etc.
2. Disengage the PTO (Blade Engage), set the parking brake and stop the
engine.
3. Thread the hose coupler (packaged with the Operator’s Manual) onto the
end of your garden hose.
