Maintenance
Spark Arrester/Muffler
Cleaning the Spark Arrester/
muffler
Regular servicing prevents carbon buildup
(which can diminish engine performance)
and also complies with USDA regulations for
regular maintenance to assure proper
function. The spark arrester prevents
random sparks from the combustion process
in your engine from reaching the
environment.
The use of safety glasses is recommended
for this procedure.
Because of the possible fire hazard, check
that there are no combustible materials in
the area before purging the spark arrester.
1. Remove the bolts, spark arrester lid, and
gasket from the spark arrester and
muffler.
2. Start the engine.
3. Block the end of the muffler with a shop
towel to create exhaust system back
pressure and rev up the engine about 20
times.
4. After cleaning the spark arrester and
muffler carbon, stop the engine, allow
the exhaust system to cool off, and
reinstall the removed parts.
