STARTING THE ENGINE
Referto the Serviceand Maintenancesectionof this manualfor
Gasolineand Oil fill-up instructions.
1. Disengageall controlson the mower.
2. Movethe gear shiftleverinto the neutral(N) position.
3. Insertthe key intothe ignitionswitch.
4. If startinga cold engine,placethe throttle/chokecontrolallthe
wayforward,intothe CHOKE1'_,1position.If restartinga warm
engine,placethe throttle/chokecontrolintothe Fast'_ position.
5. Turnthe ignitionkey clockwiseto the START___ position.After
theenginestarts,releasethe key.It will returnto the RUN(_q)
position.
6. Movethe key to the RUN/LIGHT_-:i'_i:positionto operatethe
mowerusingthe headlight.
Totravelin REVERSE,
a. Checkthat the area behindis clear.
b. Placethe gearshift leverinReverse(R).
c. Slowlysqueezethe DriveControlagainstthelefthandlegrip
andthemowerwill move.Releaseitand drivemotionwillstop.
DoNOTattemptto changethe directionof travelwhenthe moweris
in motion.Alwaysreleasethedrivecontrol and bringthe mowerto a
completestop beforerepositioningthegear shift leverfrom a forward
gearinto Reverse.Failuretodo so may resultin seriousdamageto
rourtransmission.
Donot leavethe operator'spositionwithoutfirst releasingthe Blade
Control.Ifleavingthe mowerunattended,also turnthe engineoff and
removethe ignitionkey.
Do NOTholdthe keyinthe STARTpositionfor longerthan five
secondsat a time.Doingso maycausedamageto yourengine's
electricstarter.
7. Movethe throttle/chokecontrolintothe FAST_ position.
NOTE: Neverleavethe throttle/chokecontrolinthe CHOKEI_,1
positionwhileoperatingthemower.Doingso will resultin a "rich"fuel
mixtureand cause theengineto run poorly.
Stopping the Engine

ENGAGING THE BLADES
Tohelpavoidbladecontactor a thrownobject injury,keepbystand-
lets, helpers,childrenand pets at least75 feet from the machinewhile
lit is inoperation.Stopmachineif anyoneentersthe area.
1. Movethethrottle/chokecontrolto the FAST_ position.
2. Slowly squeezethe BladeControlagainstthe righthandlegrip
andthe bladeswill engage.Releaseit and the bladeswill stop.
OPERATING ON SLOPES
Referto the SLOPEGUIDEon page5 to help determineslopeswhere
you mayoperatethemowersafely.
1. If the bladesare engaged,releasethe BladeControl.
2. Movethe throttle/chokecontrolintothe STOPI_ position.
3. Turnthe ignitionkey counterclockwiseto the STOP0 position.
4. Removethe keyfrom the ignitionswitchto preventunintended
starting.
ENGAGING THE DRIVE
Avoidsuddenstarts,excessivespeedand suddenstops.
Startthe engineas instructedearlierin this sectionand movethe
throttle/chokecontrolintothe FAST'_ position.
TotravelFORWARD:
a. Placethegear shift leverin anyof the fourforwardground
speeds.Selecta speedappropriatefor the conditionsand a
paceyou'recomfortablewith.
b. Slowlysqueezethe DriveControlagainstthe left handlegrip
andthe mowerwillmove.Releaseitanddrivemotionwillstop.
Donot mowon inclineswitha slopeinexcessof 15degrees(a rise
of approximately2-1/2feetevery 10feet).The mowercouldoverturn
andcause seriousinjury.
Mowacrossthefaceof slopes;neverup and down.
Exerciseextremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon slopes.
Watchfor holes,ruts, rocks,hiddenobjects,or bumpswhich can
causeyou to slip ortrip.Tallgrasscan hideobstacles.
Alwaysbe sureof yourfooting.A slipand fall can causeserious
personalinjury.Ifyou feelyou arelosingyourbalance,release
the bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyandthe blade willstop
rotatingwithinthree (3) seconds.
Donot mowneardrop-offs,ditchesor embankments,you could
lose yourfootingor balance.
Donot mowslopesgreaterthan 15degreesas shownon the
slopegauge.
Donot mowon wet grass.Unstablefootingcouldcauseslipping.
