#1 Does it need to be vented?

Yes i have one in an outdoor shower and the other inside a bathhouse and we put a 90 degree turn on it to go out the side of the wall and works just perfect.

#2 Since I will only be using this item for emergencies, how does one shut it off?

The unit will shut off when water stops flowing. You may also turn the water and gas dials to the lowest position, or pull the batteries out.

#3 For gas heater what is the outside dimensions, high , wigth , depth. Is it 23.6x13.6x6.9 with the extaust cap on top?

The dimensions you gave are for the body of the heater only, not including the exhaust cap, since it is removable, and not including the water and gas connections at the bottom.

#4 Has anyone installed this in place of the 6 gallon water heater in a fifth wheel? Curious if this is something we can install ourselves?

In regards to the question for the unit installation. Depending on the need for GPM used on the Fifth wheel. The unit can operate with a good PSI flow rate and gas. Depending on the use of the tankless heater... This unit only runs at max capacity of 3.1 GPM meaning, anything higher then 3.1GPM will drop temperature from the set temperature.
