Spark Plugs
Use only the recommended type of spark plug in the recommended
heat range.
NOTICE
Using spark plugs with an improper heat range can cause engine
damage.
Refer to Safety Precautions on page 105.
1.
Remove the front seat (page 122) and left side rubber dust cover.
2.
Clean any dirt from around the spark plug bases.
3.
Disconnect the top spark plug cap and side spark plug cap. Take
care to avoid damaging the spark plug wires when disconnecting
the caps.
4.
Using a spark plug wrench provided in the tool kit, remove the
spark plugs.
5.
Inspect the electrodes and center porcelain for deposits,
corrosion, or carbon fouling. If the corrosion or deposits are
heavy, replace the plug. Clean a carbon or wet-fouled plug with
a plug cleaner, if available, or a wire brush. Inspect the spark plug
electrodes for wear. The center electrode should have a flat tip
and sharp edges, and the side electrode should not be eroded. If
the electrodes and insulator tip appear unusually fouled or
burned, we suggest that you contact your dealer.
6.
Discard the spark plug if there is apparent wear or if the insulator
is cracked or chipped.
