Thetreadweargradeisacomparativeratingbased
onthewearrateofthetirewhentestedunder
controlledconditionsonaspecifiedgovernmenttest
course.Forexample,atiregraded150wouldwear
oneandone-half(11/2)timesaswellonthe
governmentcourseasatiregraded100.The
relativeperformanceoftiresdependsuponthe
actualconditionsoftheiruse,however,andmay
departsignificantlyfromthenormduetovariations
indrivinghabits,servicepracticesanddifferencesin
roadcharacteristicsandclimate.
TractionABC
Thetractiongrades,fromhighesttolowest,areA,
B,andC,andtheyrepresentthetire’sabilityto
stoponwetpavementasmeasuredundercontrolled
conditionsonspecifiedgovernmenttestsurfacesof
asphaltandconcrete.AtiremarkedCmayhave
poortractionperformance.

Thetractiongradeassignedtothistire
isbasedonbrakinig(straightahead)
tractiontestsanddoesnotinclude
cornering(turning)traction.
TemperatureABC
ThetemperaturegradesareA(thehighest),B,and
C,representingthetire’sresistancetothe
generationofheatanditsabilitytodissipateheat
whentestedundercontrolledconditionsona
specifiedindoorlaboratorytestwheel.Sustained
hightemperaturecancausethematerialofthetire
todegenerateandreducetirelife,andexcessive
temperaturecanleadtosuddentirefailure.The
gradeCcorrespondstoalevelofperformance
whichallpassengercartiresmustmeetunderthe
FederalMotorVehicleSafetyStandardNo.109.
GradesBandArepresenthigherlevelsof
performanceonthelaboratorytestwheelthanthe
minimumrequiredbylaw.
