This walk-behind lawn mower is intended to be used
by residential homeowners. it is designed primarily for
cutting grass on well-maintained lawns on residential
properties. It is not designed for cutting brush or for
agricultural uses. It starts easy and cuts cleanly. The
efciency of the cutting system leaves your lawn looking
spotless and clean.
ENGINE MANUAL
The Engine Manufacturer is responsible for all engine
related issues with regards to performance, power
rating, specications, warranty and service. Please refer
to the Engine Manufacturer's owner/operator's manual,
packed separately with your unit, for more information.

Gasoline and its vapors are extremely
flammable and explosive. Never fuel
the machine indoors or while the
engine is hot or running. Wipe up any
gasoline that spills. Keep away from any
flammables when operating the engine.
Always stop the engine before refueling.
Keep hands and feet away from moving

Use extra caution on slopes. The
machine is heavy and can speed up
when going downhill. Be prepared to

GENERAL SAFE RULES
UNDERSTAND YOUR MACHINE
Read this manual and labels afxed to the machine to understand
its limitations and potential hazards before attempting to
assemble this machine. Read, understand, and follow all
instructions on the machine and in the manuals before operation.
Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and their proper
operation. Know how to stop the machine and disengage the
controls quickly.
Make sure to read and understand all the instructions and safety
precautions as outlined in the Engine Manufacturer's manual
packed separately with your unit. Do not attempt to operate the
machine until you fully understand how to properly operate and
maintain the engine and how to avoid accidental injuries and/or
property damage.
Keep this manual and engine manual in a safe place for future and
regular reference.
If the unit is to be used by someone other than original purchaser
or loaned, rented, or sold, always provide this manual and any
needed safety training before operation. The user can prevent
and is responsible for accidents or injuries that may occur to
themselves, other people, and property.
This machine is a precision piece of power equipment, not a
plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times. This
machine has been designed to peorm one job: to mow grass. Do
not use it for any other purpose.
Do not force the machine. Use the correct machine for your
application. The correct machine will do the job more efciently
and safely at the rate it was designed.
PERSONAL SAF
Do not permit children to operate this machine at any time. Only
responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe
operation should be allowed to use this machine.
To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, stay in
operator zone behind handles and keep children, pets, and other
people not using the unit away from the work area. Be alert and
shut off unit if anyone enters work area. Keep children under the
watchful care of a responsible adult.
Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used.
Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and other foreign
objects, which could be tripped over or picked up and thrown by
the blade. Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury.
Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward
roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like. Also, avoid discharging
material against a wall or obstruction, which may cause
discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator; this
may cause personal injury.

Do not operate the machine while under the influence of drugs,
alcohol, or any medication that could affect your ability to use it
properly.
Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-tting slacks and
shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel
toed shoes are recommended. Never operate this machine in
bare feet, sandals, slippery or lightweight (e.g. canvas) shoes.
Protect eyes, face, and head from objects that may be thrown
from the unit. Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with
side shields when operating and while performing an adjustment
or repair.
Always use approved ear protection while you operate the
product. Noise for a long period can cause noise-induced hearing
loss.
Always keep hands and feet away from all moving parts and
under the cutting deck. Contact with moving parts and/or blade
can amputate ngers, hands, toes and feet.
A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or
thrown object injuries. Do not use a damaged product. Obey the
maintenance schedule. Only do the maintenance work that you
nd an instruction about in this manual.
ENGINE SAFE
A WARNING
This machine is equipped with
an inteal combustion engine
and should not be used on or near any unimproved
forest-covered, brush-covered or grass-covered land
unless the engine's haust system is equipped with a
spark arrestor meeting applicable lol or state laws
(if any).
If a spark arrestor is used, it should be maintained in effective
working order by the operator. In the State of California the
above is required by law (Section 2 of the California Public
Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal
laws apply on federal lands.
Never start or run the engine inside a closed area. The exhaust
fumes are dangerous, containing carbon monoxide, an odorless
and deadly gas.
Operate this unit only in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
Do not tamper with the engine to run it at excessive speeds. The
maximum engine speed is preset by the manufacturer and is
within safety limits. See engine manual.
The mufer keeps the noise levels to a minimum and sends the
exhaust fumes away from the operator. Do not use the product if

the mufer is missing or defective. A defective mufer increases
the noise level and the risk of re. Examine the mufer regularly
to make sure that it is attached correctly and not damaged.
Muffler and engine become hot and can cause burns. Do not
touch.
Do not modify engine. avoid serious injury or death, do not
modify engine in any way. Ta mpering with the governor setting
can lead to a runaway engine and cause it to operate at unsafe
speeds. Never tamper with factory setting of engine governor.
FUEL SAFE
Fuel is highly ammable, and its vapors can explode if ignited.
Take precautions when using to reduce the chance of serious
personal injury.
When relling or draining the fuel tank, use an approved fuel
storage container while in a clean, well-ventilated outdoor area.
Do not smoke, or allow sparks, open flames, or other sources of
ignition near the area while adding fuel or operating the unit.
Never ll the fuel tank indoors.
Keep grounded conductive objects, such as tools, away from
exposed, live electrical parts and connections to avoid sparking or
arcing. These events could ignite fumes or vapors.
Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before lling the fuel
tank. Never remove the cap of the fuel tank or add fuel while the
engine is running or when the engine is hot. Do not operate the
machine with known leaks in the fuel system.
Loosen the fuel tank cap slowly to relieve any pressure in the
tank.
Never overll the fuel tank. Fill the tank to no more than 1/2"
below the bottom of the lier neck to provide space for expansion
as the heat of the engine can cause fuel to pand.
Replace all fuel tank and container caps securely and wipe up
spilled fuel. Never operate the unit without the fuel cap securely
in place.
Avoid creating a source of ignition for spilled fuel. If fuel is spilled,
do not attempt to start the engine but move the machine away
from the area of spillage and avoid creating any source of ignition
until fuel vapors have dissipated.
Do not start the product if there is fuel or engine oil on the
product. Remove the unwanted fuel/oil and let the product dry.
When fuel is spilled on yourself or your clothes, wash your skin
and change clothes immediately.
Store fuel in containers specically designed and approved for
this purpose.

Store fuel in a cool, well-ventilated area, safely away from sparks,
open flames, or other sources of ignition.
Never store fuel or a machine with fuel in the tank inside a
building where fumes may reach a spark, open flame, or any other
source of ignition, such as a water heater, furnace, or clothes
dryer. Allow the engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.

SPECIFIC SAFE RULES
OPETION SAFE
This machine has been designed to perform one job: to mow
grass. Do not use it for any other purpose.
Operate the product only in daylight or in good articial light.
Walk, never run.
Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads.
A
missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or
thrown object injuries.
Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the
foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do not hold on to
the mower if you are falling: release the handle immediately.
Never pull the mower back toward you while you are walking. If
you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction, rst
look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow these
steps:
a. Step back from mower to fully extend your arms foard.
b. Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing.
c. Pull the mower back slowly, no more than half way toward you.
d. Repeat these steps as needed.
Do not touch parts that are hot from operation. Allow parts to
cool before attempting to maintain, adjust, or service. Serious
burns may result. Engine parts, especially the muffler, become
extremely hot during operation. Allow engine and mufer to cool
before touching.
Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense
when operating the machine.
Do not overreach. Do not operate the machine while barefoot
or when wearing sandals or similar lightweight footwear. Wear
protective footwear that will protect your feet and improve
your footing on slippery surfaces. Keep proper footing and
balance at all times. This enables better control of the machine in
unexpected situations.
Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on machines so
equipped while starting engine.
The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt
to bypass its operation. Doing so makes the safety device
inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact
with the rotating blade. The blade control handle must operate
easily in both directions and automatically return to the
disengaged position when released.
Never operate the mower on wet grass. Always be sure of your
footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you
feel you are losing your footing, release the blade control handle
immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds.
Shut the engine o and wait until the blade comes to a complete
stop before removing the grass bagger or unclogging the chute.
The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the
blade control is released. Never place any part of the body in the
blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating.
Never operate mower without proper trail shield, discharge
cover, grass bagger, blade control handle or other safety
protective devices in place and working. Never operate mower
with damaged safety devices. Failure to do so can result in
personal injury.
Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment
while the engine is running.
When starting engine, pull cord slowly until resistance is felt, then
pull rapidly. Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull
hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken
bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result.

If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop
the engine and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is
generally a warning of trouble.
This manual cannot include all situations that can occur when
you use the product. Be careful and use your common sense. Do
not operate the product or do maintenance to the product if you
are not sure about the situation. Contact Customer Support for
assistance.
SLOPE OPETION
Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents, which
can result in severe injury. Operation on slopes requires extra
caution. The machine is heavy and can speed up when going
downhill. Be prepared to maintain control of the machine. If you
feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it. If the slope is greater than
15 degrees, do not mow it.
Mow across the face of slopes, never up and down, to avoid loss
of control. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction
on slopes; watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps
which can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious
personal injury. If you feel you are losing your balance, release the
blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating.
Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments, because
you could lose your footing or balance.
WORK AREA SAF
Remove branches, twigs, stones and other objects from the lawn
before you start to cut.
Keep persons, including children, and animals at a safe distance
from the work area.
Objects that hit against the cutting equipment can be ejected and
cause damage to persons and objects.
Do not use the product in bad weather, including fog, rain, moist
or wet locations, strong winds, intense cold and risk of lightning.
Doing work in bad weather can cause fatigue and dangerous
conditions, such as slippery surfaces.
Examine your work area to make sure that your control of the
product cannot be prevented.
Be careful of roots, stones, twigs, pits and ditches.
High grass can conceal obstacles.
Operate the product only in daylight or in good articial light.
Do not operate the product on wet grass.

Be careful when you go near hidden corners and objects that can
prevent your view.
Maintain a high level of caution when you reverse or pull the
product in your direction.
MAINTENANCE SAFE
Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting the product, stop the
engine and make certain the blade and all moving parts have
stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against
the engine and remove Electric Start Push Key (if equipped) to
prevent unintended starting.
Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals
for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade for damage (e.g.,
bent, cracked, worn). Replace blade with the original equipment
manufacturer's (O.E.M.) blade only, listed in this manual. Use of
parts which do not meet the original equipment specications
may lead to improper performance and compromise safety!
Mower blades are sharp and can cut. Wrap the blade or wear
gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them.
Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment is
in safe working condition.
Accessories and changes to the product that are not approved by
the manufacturer can cause serious injury or death. Do not alter
the product. Always use accessories that are approved by the
manufacturer.
Deectors, guards and shields decrease the risk of objects being
ejected from the product in the direction of the operator or other
persons. Make sure the deectors, guards and shields are not
damaged and that no defects are in view, such as cracks, broken
springs or missing hardware. Replace any damaged or missing
parts.
If the maintenance is not done correctly and regularly, the risk of
injury and damage to the product increases.

LOWER HANDLE
Align the holes in the lower handlebar with the holes in the mowing
housing. Secure and tighten by using M8x40 screws, at washers

Align the holes in the upper handle and the holes in connecting
handlebars to set a comfortable height position for the handle, then
secure and tighten by using bolts and wing knobs. (See Fre 5)

Engine StaStop Control
The engine start/stop control is attached to the upper
handle of the mower. Depress and squeeze it against
the upper handle to operate the unit. Release it to stop
engine and blade.

Cutting Height Adjustment Lever
Move this lever to desired position to change the
cutting height.
Mulch Cover
The mulch cover is used for mulching purposes. Instead

of collecting the grass clippings in a grass catcher or
using the side discharge chute, some mower models
have the option of recirculating the clippings back to
the lawn. This is called mulching.

evaporative emissions control system components,
required to meet EPA and/or CARB regulations, that
will only function properly when the fuel tank has
been lled to the recommended level. Overlling
may cause permanent damage to evaporative
emissions control system components. Filling to the
recommended level ensures a vapor gap required to
allow for fuel expansion. Pay close attention while
lling the fuel tank to ensure that the recommended
fuel level inside the tank is not exceeded. Use a
portable gasoline container with an appropriately
sized dispensing spout when lling the tank. Do not
use a funnel or other device that obstructs the view
of the tank lling pcess.
3. Reinstall the fuel cap and tighten. Always clean up spilled fuel.

CUING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
The cutting height can be adjusted to 7 different positions. Raise
wheels for low cut and lower wheels for high cut. Adjust cutting
height to suit your requirements. Medium position is best for most
lawns.

STARTING THE ENGINE
A WARNING
Be sure no one other than
the operator is standing near
the lawn mower while starting engine or operating
mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed,
poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains
carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Keep
hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away fm any
moving parts on engine and lawn mower.
Refer to the Engine Operator's Manual for detailed
instructions on starting and stopping the engine .
Holding the engine start/stop control lever firmly, grip the starter
handle and pull lightly until you feel resistance. Then, briskly pull the
starter handle up and out at a 30 degree angle.

BASIC CUING PROCEDURE
•Always cut with a sharp blade for the best results. A blade that is
not sharp cuts unevenly and lets the grass become yellow on the
surface of the cut.
•Do not cut more than 1/3 of the
length of the grass. This especially
applies during dry periods. Cut
first with the cutting height set
high. Then examine the result and
lower to an applicable height. If the
grass is too long, operate slowly
and cut two times if necessary.
•For very heavy cutting, decrease the width of the cut by making
an overlap of the cut path and cutting slowly.
•
Cut in different directions each time to prevent stripes in the
lawn.
•
The side discharging mode of your product is the best cutting
mode. If you try to cut a large quantity of grass and the product
does not operate correctly, or has decreased operation time,
change the product to side discharging mode for better
performance and operation time.

BLADE CONTROL
1.Standing behind the mower, squeeze the engine start/stop
control lever against upper handle.
2.Holding the engine start/stop control lever firmly, grasp recoil
starter handle and pull rope out with a rapid, continuous, full arm
stroke. Keeping a firm grip on the starter handle, let the rope
rewind slowly.
3.Pull the recoil starter until engine compression has become
difficult to pull. Let the recoil return to the home position, then
pull quickly to start the engine. Repeat steps as needed.
A WARNING
Rapid retraction of the starter
cord (kickback) will pull your
hand and arm toward the engine faster than you can
let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises, or sprains
could result.
USING AS MULCHER
For mulching grass, remove the side discharge chute from the
mower. When you remove the side discharge chute, the mulch cover
will close. For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass. If the grass
has been allowed to grow in excess of four inches, mulching is not
recommended.
SIDE DISCHARGE MODE
Open the mulch cover and install the side discharge deflector. (See

machine, and may differ depending on the rate of your personal use.

DECKCARE
Clean underside of the mower deck after each use to prevent build
up of grass clippings or other debris. Follow steps below for proper
cleaning.
1.Allow the engine to run until it is out of fuel. Do not attempt to
pour fuel from the engine. Disconnect spark plug wire. Refer to
Engine Operator's Manual.
2. Tip mower so that it rests on the housing. Keep the side with the
air cleaner facing up. Hold mower rmly.

can drain into upper part of the engine causing a
starting problem.
3.Scrape and clean the underside of the deck with a suitable tool.
4.Put the mower back on its wheels on the ground.
ENGINE CARE
A list of key engine maintenance jobs required for good performance
by the mower are listed below. Follow the Engine Operator's Manual
for a detailed list and instructions.
•
Maintain oil level as instructed in Engine Operator's Manual.
• Service air cleaner every 25 hours of use under normal conditions.
Clean every few hours under extremely dusty conditions. Poor
engine performance and flooding usually indicates that the air
cleaner should be serviced. To service the air cleaner, refer to the
Engine Operator's Manual.
• Clean spark plug and reset the gap once a season. Spark plug
replacement is recommended at the start of each mowing
season. Check Engine Operator's Manual for correct plug type
and gap specifications.
• Clean engine regularly with a cloth or brush. Keep the top of the
engine clean to permit proper air circulation. Remove all grass,
dirt, and combustible debris from muffler area.
• Engines stored between 30 and 90 days need to be treated
with a gasoline stabilizer to prevent deterioration and gum from
forming in fuel system or on essential carburetor parts.

CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL
See Maintenance schedule on page 19 for more information about
when to change the oil. To change the oil, usethefollowing procedure.
� NOTE
Run the engine for a few
minutes before changing the
oil to warm it. Warm oil ows better and carries more
contaminants. We recommend that you use AP/
SERVICE Category SJ class or higher oil.
1.Move the machine to a level surface.
2.Refer to the maintenance safety section on page 9 before doing
oil change.
3.Remove the dipstick by rotating the cap counterclockwise and
pulling it out. (See Figu 13)

4.Tip the machine onto its side (so that the air filter is up) to drain
the used oil from the oil-fill tube. (See 14)

5.After draining the used oil, return the machine to the operating
position.
6.Carefully pour about 3/4 of the engine capacity of oil into the oil-
fill tube.
7.Wait 3 minutes for the oil to settle in the engine.
8. Wipe the dipstick clean with a clean cloth.
9.Insert the dipstick into the oil-fill tube, then remove the dipstick.
10.Read the oil level on the dipstick. (See 13)
•If the oil level on the dipstick is too low, carefully pour a small
amount of oil into the oil-fill tube, wait 3 minutes, and repeat
steps 8 through 10 until the oil level on the dipstick is correct.
•If the oil level on the dipstick is too high, drain the excess oil until
the oil level on the dipstick is correct.

If the oil level in the engine is
too low or too high and you
run the engine, you may damage the engine.
11.Install the dipstick into the oil-fill tube securely.
12.Recycle the used oil properly.

BLADE CARE
A WARNING
Always stop the engine before
you do work on the blade. The
blade continues to tate after the throttle has been
released. Make sure that the blade is fully stopped
and disconnect the spark plug cap before you start
work.

TRANSPORTANDSTORAGE
The following steps should be taken to prepare your lawn mower
for storage.
Keep all equipment safe during transportation to prevent damage
and accidents.
For storage, keep equipment in a lockable area away from children
and persons that are not approved. Do not store next to corrosive
materials, such as fertilizer.
For storage, keep the product and equipment in a dry and frost
proof area.
When loading or moving the product, do not go more than the
maximum recommended operation angle of 15 degrees.
Empty the fuel tank by operating the product until the tank is empty.
� NOTE
Old fuel in the fuel tank is the
leading cause of hard staing.
Do not store fuel without fuel stabilizer more than 30
days, and do not store stabilized fuel more than 90
days.
Remove the spark plug, pour a tablespoon (5-10 cc) of clean engine
oil into the cylinder, and pull the starter rope slowly several times to
distribute oil throughout the cylinder to prevent cylinder corrosion
during the off-season. Loosely install the spark plug.
Drain the engine oil.
Clean the product.
Tighten bolts and nuts.
Replace or repair damaged components.
