Pre-Collision Braking System
49
If there is an obstacle ahead while driving, the Pre-Collision Braking System activates pri-
mary vehicle braking and then secondary braking to help avoid a collision. After secondary
braking activates, the system determines whether the road you are driving on has lane
markings and also determines whether there is sufficient space for avoiding a collision in
your lane. At the same time, the system checks whether there is a vehicle approaching from
the rear, using the BSD/RCTA to determine if the lane is clear to activate Automatic Emer-
gency Steering. If there is an extremely high possibility of a collision with the obstacle using
only secondary braking, Automatic Emergency Steering is activated, and the system con-
trols the steering wheel to help avoid the collision while staying in the lane. After a collision
with the object is avoided, the system continues to control the brake and steering wheel so
that your vehicle does not leave its lane until the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

Automatic Emergency Steering operation
(if equipped)
WARNING
Automatic Emergency Steering recognizes vehicles, motorcycles, pedestri-
ans, and cyclists as identified objects. The system is intended to avoid or
reduce the severity of collisions, but if the system cannot recognize objects
due to certain conditions*, it may not activate.
When Automatic Emergency Steering activates, the driver should check the
area around the vehicle and then take appropriate action, such as operating
the steering wheel or depressing the brakes.
