Always wear gloveswhen handlingthe
chain. The chain is sharp enough to cut you even
though itis too dull to cut wood.
1. CHAIN MAINTENANCE
* Sharpen the chain when:
-- Wood chipsare small and powdery.Wool
chips'made by the saw (_hainshould be
about the size of the teeth ofthe chain.
-- Saw has to be forced through the cut.
-- Saw cuts to one side.
a. CLEAN TREE SAP FROM THE CHAIN
BEFORE IT IS .SHARPENED:
: 1.) .Soak(:hainin a petroleum based solvent
or a detergent and water solution.
2.) Dry chainthoroughly.
3.) Immersetheclean chaininlightoiluntiloil
seeps intothe rivet holes.
NOTE: Donotruna chainwhich hasbeen
cleaned without lubricating it first.

1.) Sharpen Cutters.
a.) Supportthe square rodon thefife holder
(with5/32" roundfile)onthecuttertopplate
anddepth gauge. Figure31,
b.) Holdtheriteholder levelwiththe30° guide
mark p_ra!lel to the center of the chain.

c.) File from inside towardoutside of cutter,
str_ght across,onforward strokeonly.Use
2 or 3 strokes percutting edge,Figure32.
d.) Keepallcuttersthesamelength.Figure33.
e.) File enough to remove any damage to
cutting edge (side & top plate) of cutter.

_WARNING
Maintain the proper hook angle according to the
manufacturei_'s specification for the Chain you are
Using. Too"muchhook angle will increase the chanc e
of kickback which can resultin serious injury. Figums
34 and 36.
2.) Correct Depth Gauges
NOTE: Avoid contact with other parts of the
chain toprevent damage tochain•
a.) Place depth gauge tool (Catalog No.
71-36557) over each cutter depth gauge.

b.) File level with the flat file if depth gauge is
higherthan the depthgauge tool.
c.) Maintain rounded front corner of depth
gauge with a fiat file, Figure 35 &36.
NOTE: The very top of the depth gauge
shouldbe flat with the front half rounded :
off with a flat file. ' .....

Depth gauge tool is required to insure proper depth
gauge filing. Filing the depth gauge too deep will
increase the chance of kickback which can result in
serious injury.
