FELLING LARGE TREES

The notchmethodis usedto fell large
trees.A notchis cutonthe sideof the
treein the desireddirectionoffall. After
a felling cutis made onthe opposite
sideoftree, thetree shouldfall inthe
directionof the notch.
NOTE: Ifthe tree haslargebuttress
roots,removethembeforemakingthe
notch.
NOTCHCUT AND FELLINGTREE
• Makenotchcut by cuttingthetopof
thenotchfirst.Cutthrough1/3ofthe
diameterof the tree.Nextcomplete
thenotchbycuttingthe bottom.See
illustration.Oncethe notchiscut re-
movethe wedgeof Woodfrom the
tree.
• Afterremovingthe wood,makethe
felling cut onthe oppositesideof the
notch.Thisis doneby makinga cut
abouttwo incheshigherthanthe cen-
ter ofthe notch.Thiswillleave
enoughuncutwoodbetweenthe fell-
ingcut andthenotchtoform a hinge.
Thishingewillhelppreventthetree
from fallinginthe wrongdirection.
