BLADE CARE
Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterfor cracks,especiallyif you
strikea foreignobject.Replacewhen necessary.Followthe steps
belowfor bladeservice.
Whenremovingthecuttingbladefor sharpeningor replacement,
protectyourhandswitha pairof heavyglovesor usea heavyrag to
holdthe blade.
1. Disconnectspark plug bootfrom spark plug.Turnmoweron its
side makingsurethatthe air filterandthe carburetorare facing
up.
2. Removethe boltand the bladebell supportwhichholdthe blade
andthe bladeadapterto the enginecrankshaft.See Figure18.
3. Removebladeandadapterfrom the crankshaft.
4. Removebladefromthe adapterfor testingbalance.Balancethe
bladeon a roundshaftscrewdriverto check. Removemetalfrom
the heavyside untilit balancesevenly.When sharpeningthe
blade,follow theoriginalangle of grind.Grind eachcuttingedge
equallyto keepthe bladebalanced.

Anunbalancedblade willcause excessivevibrationwhen rotatingat
highspeeds.It maycausedamageto mowerandcouldbreakcausin(
personalinjury.
5. Lubricatethe enginecrankshaftandthe innersurfaceof the blade
adapterwith lightoil. Slidethe bladeadapteronto theengine
crankshaft.Placethebladeonthe adaptersuch that the sideof
the blademarked"Bottom"(or withpartnumber)facesthe ground
whenthe moweris inthe operatingposition.Make surethat the
bladeisalignedandseatedon the bladeadapterflanges.
6. Placebladebellsupporton the blade.Align notcheson the blade
bellsupportwithsmallholesin blade.
7. Replacehexbolt andtightenhexbolt to torque:450in. Ibs.rain.,
600in. Ibs.max.
Toensuresafeoperationof yourmower,periodicallycheckthe blade
boltfor correcttorque.
BELT CARE
NOTE:Severalcomponentsmust beremovedin orderto changethe
mower'sself-propulsiondrivebelt.SeeanauthorizedSearsService
Centerto haveyourbelt replaced.
REPLACING BATTERY
Batteriescontainsulfuricacid whichmay causeburns. Donot short
I circuitormutilatebatteriesin anyway.Do not putbatteriesin fireas
lthese may burstorreleasetoxic materials.
1. Loosenstar knobs securingupper and lowerhandlesand
carefullyfoldthe upperhandledowntowardthelowerhandleas
shownin Figure19.
2. Removethe two screwssecuringbatterycoverto batteryhousing
andplacethemto the side.See Figure19.
