#2 How hot does the tabletop get beneath the unit? Could it damage formica laminate?
The unit does not get heated at the bottom because the coils are built into the plates, I do not think it would hurt formica, but would test it with a mat under it for the first try. I have granite so it was never a worry for me. They make silicone mats that could go under it if you are worried.
It won't have the waffle shapes. It is a very good, powerful grill but I don't think it is designed to make waffle.
#4 How does it work for meat? Is there a lot of splatter?
Cooks meat in minutes. No splatter, just vapors/steam that get on the outside. Easy cleanup. I really like it.
#5 Has anyone tried replacing the griddle plate with a grill plate and grilling meat with the top closed? Or using it as a Panini press in that manner?
Yes, I have two sets of plates and use them for grilling meat with top closed and used as a panini press. Both work great!!!
#6 If I buy this, it will be sitting on a kitchen island with the back exposed. Can anyone tell me if the back is nasty looking or fairly attractive ?
It isn't gross looking but you will see the cord and personally, I don't think I would want it setting on the island where it would be seen. I have mine sitting upright on my counter under my cabinets with the front side facing out. It fits perfectly and looks nice.
#7 Is this too much for a single person? Even if it is the "best", is it too large for an individual living in a condo?
I am single and love it! I love leftovers and don’t have to cook every night!
