#1 Can you lower the food with the lid closed?

No you have to lower the food then close the lid but its not inconvient

#2 Can it fry without the basket?

Yes but be careful not to disturb the heating elements or let food rest on them and burn-so whatever you are frying it is going to have to float-therefor I would always use the basket with this model with exposed elements.

#3 Does this have a hidged lid?

Yes the lid is hinged but there is some assembly required.

#4 Can you cook other things in it besides frying?

This fryer has the element right in the oil so no you can't do anything but fry in it. It's not like you could use it like a crockpot/slow cooker.
