#1 Can this be assembled with the shelves upside down, so that they have a lip? Or would this affect their weight capacity?

Ǹo you can't make it that way. The shelves have been designed in such a way that it would not be possible to assemble upside down.

#2 What are the internal dimensions of the shelves please?

the shelves are 86x35 cms, you can set them at variable heights. The unit comes with wheels or feet - you have a choice which to fit. The uprights are in 2 halves - easy screw together, but you cannot fit an additional layer on top to make it taller than manufactured. Very easy to fit together.
