The biggest energy demand with this appliance occurs when it brings a tank of cold water up to temperature. Overcoming all that thermal inertia is much harder work than simply replacing the small amount of energy that "leaks" out of the the appliance over time.

If your jar pot is sized appropriately for your usage leave it on. If you have too large a unit (is this possible? ; ) or too small a unit, and are concerned about energy consumption, you may want to purchase something more appropriate to your demands. If you are going on a long vacation, you may want to unplug it, but I suggest that you also empty the pot and leave the lid open or off to prevent development of bad tastes, mold, etc.,.

We have had our current pot in continuous operation since 2013. It is used heavily, and is never unplugged. About two weeks ago I had to replace the lid seal (readily available from Zo) which took all of five minutes. That is the only maintenance we have needed in approximately 52,560 hours of uninterrupted operation. Not too shabby. Feel free to leave it up and running. No one should have to wait for coffee.

Thank you for your review. Filtered or bottled water is recommended, however cleaning is still recommended to avoid the formation of mineral scale. Performing the citric acid cleaning will be more frequent when using mineral or Alkalized Ionic Water. The Citric Acid cleaning prevents the iron deposits or "rust-like" spots from forming as well as the build-up of calcium deposits. The rust is from the iron in the water attaching itself on to the inside of the water boiler. It takes my pot about 25 minutes to go from 80 degrees to 212--I made a point of checking yesterday. However, I never have to wait for it to heat. I always fill my pot (when it gets low) prior to going to bed and set the timer (3 quick presses on the timer button!) to turn on after 8 hours. The pot is hot when I am ready for my first cup of tea in the morning. Love this pot!
