Each item in the event list is explained as follows (take the distance unit km as an
example) :
1) Event type:
: It indicates that this event point may be the starting point of the fiber.
: It indicates that this event point is a descending event point.
: It indicates that this event point is an ascending event point.
: It indicates that this event point is a reflection event point.
: It indicates that this event point may be the end of the fiber.
2) No.: The number of the current event point.
3) Distance (km): The distance from the current event point to the reference origin.
4) Attenuation (dB/km) : Average loss of the fiber before the current event point.
5) Loss (dB): Connection loss measured at the current event point. * It indicates
that the current measured connection loss is greater than the set connection

loss passage threshold.
6) Reflection (dB): Reflection loss measured at the current event point. * It
indicates that the current measured reflection loss is greater than the set
reflection loss passing threshold.
7) Total (dB): Total loss of the fiber segment between the current event point and
the reference point.
During data analysis, there will be three kinds of threshold setting: loss analysis
threshold, loss passing threshold (including the threshold of joint loss and reflection
loss), and optical fiber terminal threshold.
In the event list, only the event points whose joint loss is greater than the set loss
analysis threshold will be displayed, and the event points whose joint loss is less
than the set loss analysis threshold will be ignored.
A value marked with * indicates that the value is greater than the set loss passage
threshold.

39
Chapter VII Module of optical time domain reflectometer
If the calculated joint loss is greater than the set terminal threshold, this point is
taken as the end of the fiber, and all subsequent event points will be ignored and will
no longer be displayed.

7) After curve analysis, test results can be viewed in the event list.
5.2
Test mode of OTDR
OTDR has two test modes: automatic test and manual test.
1) Automatic test :
When OTDR test mode is set to automatic test: After the test key is pressed, OTDR
will automatically adjust the test conditions to test the tested fiber link. After the test
is completed, curve analysis will be performed automatically, and the test curve and
event list will be displayed in the main operation window.
2) Manual test:
When OTDR test mode is set to manual test: After clicking the [Real-time] button in
the main menu bar (at this time, the content on the [Real-time] menu button
changes to [Stop]), OTDR will conduct real-time scanning test on the tested fiber
link according to the currently set test conditions, and the test curve in the main
operation window will be constantly refreshed. When OTDR test mode is set to
manual test: After pressing the test key or clicking the [Average] button in the main

menu bar (at this time, the content on the [Average] menu button changes to [Stop]),
and OTDR will average the tested fiber link according to the set test conditions. The
test curves in the main operation window will be averaged continuously until the
average time displayed on the interface equals the set average time, and OTDR will
stop testing.
Manual test mode carries out single real-time or average test according to manually
or automatically set test conditions (i.e. range, pulse width and attenuation).
In the automatic test mode, the instrument will automatically set and adjust the test
conditions according to the condition of the tested fiber.
Real-time test under manual test mode can observe the fiber line under test in real
time.
The average test under manual test mode can obtain the test curve with higher SNR,
which is more smooth, and conducive to data analysis, with more accurate test
results.
background
53
Chapter VII Module of optical time domain reflectometer
In the automatic test mode, after the test, the instrument will analyze the test curve
and give a list of events. In other test modes, only when the [Post-test analysis]
function is selected can the instrument automatically analyze the test curve after
stopping the test. Otherwise, it must click the [Analysis] button in the main menu bar
to analyze the curve and then give a list of events.
5.3
Test parameter of OTDR
OTDR test parameters include: wavelength, range, pulse width, average time, refractive
index, fiber optic cable correction factor, etc.
1) Wavelength:
It is used to set the test wavelength of OTDR. The number of wavelengths
allowed to be selected by OTDR is determined by the module of the
instrument, and up to 4 wavelengths can be selected.
Multiple wavelengths are allowed to be selected simultaneously in average
test and automatic test mode. During the test, the instrument will test at
each selected wavelength in turn until all the selected wavelengths have
been tested. The instrument is allowed to select up to four wavelengths at
background
54
Chapter VII Module of optical time domain reflectometer
the same time.
When the module equipped with the instrument includes both single and
multi-mode modules, please pay attention to connect the tested fiber to the
corresponding test interface to ensure the correct test curve.
2) Measuring range (km) :
It is used to set the scan curve range. The range of the optical time
domain reflectometer is divided into the following stages: 400m, 800m,
1.6km, 3.2km, 8km, 16km, 32km, 64km, 128km, 256km and 512km (the
maximum optional range is related to the selected module).
Instruction!
The measuring range must be larger than the length of the fiber under test
(preferably larger than twice the length of the fiber under test)
3) Pulse width (ns) :
It is used to set the width of the laser pulse to be used in the test. The
larger pulse width can be used to test the longer fiber. The signal-to-noise
background

The pulse width that can be set depends on the selected test range
Instruction!
The longer the average time, the smoother the test curve (i.e., the higher
the SNR, especially useful for testing long distance optical fibers).
The increased SNR of the test curve is beneficial to OTDR detection of
smaller event points.
In automatic test mode, more average times will affect the speed of
automatic test.
ratio of the test curve is better, the curve is smoother, but the resolution is
poor. The smaller pulse width has a higher resolution, but the
measurement distance is shorter, and the signal-to-noise ratio the test
curve is poor.
4) Average time:
It is used to set the maximum average time for average testing and
automated testing. In the average test mode, the values are 15, 30, 45, 60,
90, 120 and 180. In the auto test mode, the values are 15, 30, 45, 60, 90,
120 and 180.

54
Note!
If the refractive index is not set accurately, the length of the fiber measured is also
inaccurate.
Note!
If cable correction is not accurate, the cable length measured is not accurate.
5) Refractive index:
The refractive index of optical fiber or cable can be obtained from the
manufacturer. The refractive index can be set to 1.00000 ~ 2.00000.
6) Cable correction:
The fiber optic cable correction factor is inserted to take into account the
error between the length of the fiber and the length of the fiber. It is
available from fiber optic cable manufacturers. Its value can be set to
0.80000 to 1.00000. The default value is 1.00000.

7) Lock markers A and B:
When this option is selected, the distance between marker A and marker B
is locked. When either marker is moved, the two markers move together,
keeping the distance between them the same. If this is not selected, when
one marker is moved, the other one remains in its original position.
8) High resolution test:
When this option is selected, the maximum number of sampling points of
the instrument is increased to 256k, which enhances the resolution of
events occurring within a short distance in the fiber link under test.
5.4
Test items of OTDR
OTDR test items can be selected as follows: average loss, connection loss and
reflection loss. Click the arrow control to switch test items. It is shown in Fig. 7-8.

1) Average loss
At this time, the test results displayed in the OTDR main interface are as
follows: loss between A and B, distance between the markers A and B, and
average loss between the optical fiber segment where markers A and B
are located.
2) Connection loss:
At this time, four markers will be displayed in the main interface of OTDR,
and the connection loss of the connection point where marker A is shown
in the test results.
3) Reflection loss:
At this time, the test results displayed in the main interface of OTDR are
the reflection loss of the optical fiber reflection peak where markers A and
B are, and the distance between two points A andB.
background
Chapter VII Module of optical time domain reflectometer
58
When testing the average loss, markers A and B must be set on the linear section of
the fiber curve, otherwise the calculated average loss will have a large error.
When testing connection loss, four markers appear in order: marker a, marker A,
marker B, and marker b. Set marker a and marker A on the linear segment of the
fiber curve before the connection point. Marker A is set near the join point. Set
marker B and marker b on the linear segment of the fiber curve after the connection
point.
When testing the reflection loss, set marker A in front of the reflection peak to be
tested and near the take-off point of the reflection peak. Set marker B on the top of
the reflection peak to be tested.
5.5
Event analysis and passing threshold
On the OTDR test condition setting interface, you can set the event analysis and passing
threshold.
1) Loss analysis threshold:
When analyzing the test curve data and the calculated connection loss of

the event point is greater than the loss analysis threshold, the event point
will be marked. Otherwise it will be automatically ignored.
2) Passing threshold of joint loss:
In the event list, when the calculated event point connection loss is greater
than the set connection loss passing threshold, the connection loss value
will be marked with “*”.
3) Reflection loss passing threshold:
In the event list, when the calculated reflection loss at the event point is
greater than the set reflection loss passing threshold, the reflection loss
value will be marked with “*”.
4) Fiber terminal threshold:
When the connection loss of the event point is greater than the threshold
value of the fiber terminal, the event point is considered as the fiber
terminal. All events after this event point are ignored and not shown in the
list.

5.12
Reasons for failure of curve test and analysis
If the result of curve test and analysis is quite different from the expected result, or the
expected result does not appear, it may be caused by one of the following reasons:
1) The test curve of the fiber was not obtained
If the test curve only has the front end reflection peak, and there is no linear curve
reflecting the characteristics of the fiber, please check:
Whether the end face type of the tested fiber is consistent with the end
face type of the OTDR optical output port.
Whether the end face of the fiber is contaminated.
background
Chapter VII Module of optical time domain reflectometer
74
Instruction!
Whether the optical output flange of OTDR is cracked.
Use the VFL function to check whether the near end of the fiber link under
test has high loss.
If the fiber link you tested is very short, such as less than 100m, the following test
method and test conditions are recommended:
Please set: average test mode, measuring range of less than 800m, pulse width of
less than 80ns, attenuation of 15dB or 20dB, and a certain average time.
If 15dB attenuation is set, a better SNR test curve can be obtained, which is
conducive to curve analysis. A smaller test blind area can be obtained by setting
20dB attenuation, but the signal-to-noise ratio of the curve is relatively low, so a
larger average time is needed to obtain a curve with a higher signal-to-noise ratio.
2) The near end of the test curve showed more serious trailing phenomenon
If a relatively serious trailing phenomenon is observed on the falling edge of the
background

75
reflection peak at the near end of the test curve, please try the following:
Please dip a cotton wool ball in an appropriate amount of anhydrous ethanol to
clean the end face of the tested fiber and that of the optical output end
connector of the OTDR.
Re-test the curve with a smaller pulse width (note that the average test is
selected and the average time is set).
Re-test the curve with a large attenuation at the current pulse width (note that
the average test mode is selected and the average time is set).
3) The event points in the test curve are too close together
If an adjacent event point is found missing, try the following:
Re-test the curve with a smaller pulse width (note that the average test is
selected and the average time is set).
Please set a certain average time and use the average test method to
improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the curve.
background
Chapter VII Module of optical time domain reflectometer
76
4) The SNR of the test curve is poor
If the signal-noise ratio of the test curve is poor, the accuracy of the curve analysis
will be affected. In this case, try the following:
In the automatic test or average test mode, please increase the average
time value appropriately.
Please use a larger pulse width to retest after setting the appropriate test
range under the average test mode.
5) The OTDR test parameters set are incorrect
If there is a big difference between the measured fiber length and the actual value,
please check:
Whether the refractive index value and optical fiber correction coefficient
value set are consistent with the nominal value of the fiber or optical fiber
measured.
If the refractive index is not consistent, the measured length of the fiber will
be seriously affected.

Chapter VIII Working principles
Chapter VIII Working principles
1 Working principles
When light is transmitted in optical fiber, Rayleigh scattering is caused by slight
fluctuation of refractive index of optical fiber, and Fresnel reflection is caused by abrupt
change of refractive index of optical fiber end face or fault point. Loss distribution and
joint loss can be determined by observing Rayleigh backscattered light intensity change,
and breakpoint and fault point can be determined by observing Fresnel reflection.
2 Event point type description
The event points on the curve of measured fiber can be divided into reflection event
points and non-reflection event points.
The reflection event point is usually caused by a fixed connector or a fractured surface at
the end of the optical fiber, representing a peak. It is shown in the figure below.
