Media Streams
Media Streams
The Axis product provides several vide o stream forma ts. Your requirements and the properties of your ne tw o rk will determine the
type you use.
The Live View page in the product provides access to H .264 and Motion JPEG video stream s, and to the list of available stream proles.
Other applications and clients can access video streams directly, without going via the Live View page.
How to Stream H.264
The video com pression standard H.264 makes good use o f bandwidth, and can provide high quality video streams at less than 1 Mbit/s.
Deciding which combination of protocols and methods to use depends on your viewing requirements, and on the properties of
your netw ork. The available options in AXIS Media Control are:
Unicast RTP
This unicast method (RTP over UDP) is used
for live uni cast video, especially wh en it is
important to always have an up-to-date video
stream, even if some images are dropped.
RTP over RTSP
This unicast method (RTP tunneled over RTSP)
is useful as it is re la tively simple to co n gure
rewallstoallowRTSPtrafc.
RTP over RTSP over HTTP
This unicast method can be used to traverse
rewalls. Firewalls are commonly congured to
allow the HTTP protocol, thus allowing RTP to
be tunneled.
Unicasting is used for video-on-demand
transmission so that there is no video trafc
on the network until a client connects and
requests the stream.
Note that there are a maximum of 20
simultaneous unicast connections.
Multicast RTP
This method (RTP o ver UDP) should be used for l iv e multicast video. The video stream is always
up-to-date, even if some images are dropped.
Multicasting provides the most efcient usage of bandwidth when there are large numbers of
clients viewing simultaneously. A multicast cannot however, pass a network router unless the
router is congured to allow this. It is not possible to mul ticast over the Internet, for example.
Note also that all m ultica st viewers count a s one unicast viewer in the maximum total of 20
simultaneous connections.
AXIS Media Control negotiates with the Axis pr oduct to determine the transport protocol to use. The order of priority, listed in the
AMC Con trol Panel, can be changed and the optio ns disabled, to suit specic requirements.
Note
H.264 is licensed technology. The Axis product includes one H.264 viewing clie nt license. Install ing additional unlicen se d
copies of the c lient is prohibited. To
purchase additional lice n ses, conta c t your Axis reseller.
MJPEG
This format uses standard JPEG still ima g es for the video s tream. These images are then displayedandupdatedataratesufcient
to create a stream that shows constantly updated motion.
The Motion JPEG s tream uses considerable amounts of b andw idth, but provides excellent image qualityandaccesstoeveryimage
contained in the stream. The recommended method of accessing Motion JPEG live video from the Axis product is to use the AXIS
Media Control in Internet Explorer in W ind ow s.
AXIS Media Control (AMC)
AXIS Media C ontrol (AMC) in Internet Explorer in Windows is the recomme nded method of accessing live video from the Axis p roduct.

You can modify the image resolution and compression, and rotate the image from the Image tab (Video > Video Stream).
The image can also be mirrored from the Image tab.
Setting the compression level affects the image quality and bandwidth; the lower the compression, the higher the image quality
with higher bandwidth requirements.
To avoid bandwidth proble m s on the network, you can limit the frame rate all owe d to each viewer. The maximum fram e ra te can be
set to Unlimited, or you can limit the frame rate to a value.

H.264
H.264, also known as MPEG-4 Part 10/AVC, is a video compression standard that provides high quality video streams at low bit rates.
An H.264 video stream consists of different types of frames such as I-frames and P-frames. An I-frame is a com ple te image w h e re as
P-frames only contain the differences from pr evious frame s .
The GOV length is the number of f ram es betw een two consecutive I-frames. Increasing the GOV length may save considerably on
bandwidth requirements in some cases, but may also have an adverse a ffe ct on image quality.
The Axis pro duct supports tw o H.264 proles.TheMainprole provides higher compre ss ion than the Ba se line pr ole with the same
video quality, b ut requires more p rocessing power to decode.
ThebitratecanbesetasVariable Bit Rate (VBR) or Constant Bit Rate (CBR). VBR adjusts the bit rate according to the image
complexity, using up mo re b andw idth for increased activity in the image, and le ss for lo wer im a ge ac tivity. CBR a llow s you to s et a
xed Target bit rate that consumes a predictable amount of bandwidth. As the bit rate would usually need to increase for increa sed
image activity, but in this case cannot, frame rate and image qualityareaffectednegatively.Topartly compensate for this, it is
possible to prio ritize e ither frame rate or im age quality. Not setting a priority means that f ram e rate and image qua lity are equally
affected. You must save your settings before they can take effect.
The current bit rate can be set to appear as text overlay. To do this, select the Include text check box option under Overlay
Settings and enter the modier#b in the el d.
MJPEG
Sometimes the image size is l arge due to low light or com ple x scenery. Adjusting the maxim um frame size helps to control the
bandwidth and storag e used by the Motion JPEG video stream in these situations. Setting the fram
esizetotheDefault setting
provides consistently good image quality at the expense of increased bandwidth and storage usage in low light. Limiting the frame
size optimizes bandwidth and storage usag e, but may give poor image quality. To prevent increased b andw idth and storage usage,
the m a xim um frame size should be set to an optima l value.
Stream Proles
There are four pre-programmed stream proles ava ilab le for quick set up. The settings for thes e can be adjusted. New customized
proles can also be created. Each prole has a descriptive name, indicating its purpose.
•Thestreamproles can be accessed from the Stream prole dro p-dow n list in the Live View pag e.
To add, copy, modify, and remove stream pro les go to Video > Stream Proles.
To select the default s tre am prole go to Live View C ong > Stream Prole and choose the prole from the drop-down list.

Camera Settings
The Video > Camera Settings page provides access to advanced image settings for the Axis product.
Image Appearance
Increasing the Color level increases the color saturation. The value 100 gives maximum color saturation. The value 0 gives a
black and white image.
The image Brightness can be adjusted in the range 0–100, where a higher value produces a brighter image.
Increasing the Sharpness can increa se bandw idth usa ge . A sharper image might increase image noise especia lly in low light
conditions. A lower setting reduces image noise, but the whole image will appear less sharp.

Wide D ynamic Range
Wide dynamic range (Dynamic Contrast) can improve the exposure when there is a considerable contrast between light and dark
areas in the image. Enable WDR in intense backli ght conditions. Disable WDR in low light conditions f or optim al e xp osure .
Note
This se tting is only possible when using automatic exposure control.
Exposure Settings
Congure the exposure settings to suit the image quality requirements in relation to lighting, frame rate and bandwidth
considerations.
Exposure value - Click in the bar to ne-tune the exposure.
Exposure control - These settings is used to adapt to the amount of light used. Automatic is the default s ettings can be used in m o st
situations. The shutter speed is automatically s et to produce optimum image quality. Flicker-fre
e50or60Hzis used to remove
icker which can be c aused by uorescent and other light sources. The Hold current option l ocks the current exposure settings.
Enable Backlight compensation - Enable this option if a b right spot of light, for example a light bulb, causes other areas in
the image to appear too dark.
Exposure zones - This settings determines which part of the image is used to calculate the exposure. For most situations, the Auto
setting can be used. For particular r equirement, select
apredened area.
Shutter & Gain
The shutter and gain settings affect the amount of motion blur and noise in the image. To adapt to different lighting, a vailable
storage space and bandw idth, it is often neces
sary to prior itize either low motion blur or low noise. The Axis product allows
using different prioritization in normal light and in low light.
Shutter speed is related to the amount of time the shutter is opened and is measured in seconds (s). A slow shutter speed allows
more light to reach the sensor and can help produce a brighter image in low light s ituations. O n the other hand, a slow shutter
speedcancausemovingobje
cts to a ppear blurry.
Set Shutter to
Auto to set the shu
tter speed automatically. If required, use Max shutter to limit the shutter speed to prevent the frame
rate from being reduced. For example, to get 30 fps, set Max shutter to 1/30.
Fixed to use a xed shutter speed.
Gain, measured in decibel (dB), is the amount of amplication applied to the image. A high gain may provide a better imag e in low
light si tuations but will increase the amount of im a ge noise.
Set Gain to
Auto to set the gain automatically. If required, use Max gain to limit the a pplie d gain.
16
background
AXIS P3354
Setting Up the Product
Fixed to use a xed gain.
When Shutter and Gain are both set to Auto, it is possible to set the Priority between low motion blur and low noise manually and to
use a diff erent Priority in Normal Light and in Low Light.
Example
Consider an area where people or vehicles move during the day, but where there s hould be n o movements during night. To be able to,
for example, recognize faces or license plates, move the normal light priority slider toward low motion blur. At nighttime, motion
detection is more important than identication. Motion blur is acceptable and since low light can cause a lot of noise, mo ve
the low light priority slider toward low noise.
Example
If stora ge sp ace or bandw idth is limite d, try using a low er ga in. This will reduce im age noise a nd produce smaller image les.
Iris adjustment
Select Enable automatic iris adjustment to automatically compensate for changing light conditions. T his option is not available
if a xed iris is used.
Use the Iris adjustment slider to set the preferred F-value. The scale rep resents the amount the iris is open. If set to 0, the iris
is opened a s much as possible. If set to 100, the iris is closed as much as possible. The actual F-value is shown below the
slider. If a utom atic iris adjustment is enabled , the iris will stay at this position as long as light conditions are favorable. If light
conditions change, the iris will ad just itself to the best iris setting s. If automatic iris adjustment is disable d, the iris will lock on
the set position regardless of light conditions
Day/Night
The IR cut lter prevents infrared (IR) light fro m reaching the image sensor. In poor lighting conditions, for example at night, or
when using an IR lamp, set the IR cut lter to Off. This increase s light sensitivity and allows the product to “see” infrared light. The
image is shown in black and white when the IR cut lter is off.
If using automatic Exposure control, settheIRcutlter to Auto to automatically switch between On and Off accordingtothe
lighting conditions.
The Day/Night shift level bar help s determine when the camera will shift from day mode to night mode. Normally, the cam era
automatically changes mode from d ay to night when ver y dark (level 100 in the sli
der). B y setting Day/Night shift level to a
lower value, the ca mer a will change to night m od e earlier.
View Area
A view area is a cropped part of the full view. The view area is treated as a video source in Live View and has its own video
stream and PTZ setti n gs.
When setting up a view area it is recommende d that the video stream resolutio n is the same size as or smaller than the view are a
size. Setting the video str
eam resolution larger than the view area size implies digitally scaled up video after sensor capture,
requiring more bandwid th without adding image information.
To enable a view area, go to Video > Camera Settings and select Ena ble View Area.
To congure the view area:

IEEE 802.1X
IEEE 802.1X is a standard for port-based Network Admission Control providing secure authentication of wired and wireless ne
twork
devices. IEEE 802.1X is based on EAP (Extensible A uthentication Protocol).
To access a network protected b y IEEE 802.1X, devices must authenticate themselves. The authentication is performed by a
third-party e ntity called an authe ntic ation server, typically a RADIUS server, examples of which are FreeRADIUS and Microsoft
Internet Authentication Service.
In Axis' im plementation, the network device and the authent
ication server authenticate themselves with the help of digital
certicates using EAP-TLS (Extensible Authentication Protocol - Transport Layer Security). The certicates are provided by an
Certication Authority (CA ). You need:
•aCAcerticate to validate the identity of the authentication server
a CA-signed client certi ca te and a private key to a uthenticate the network device.
To allow the network device to access a network protected by IEEE 802.1X:
1. Obtain a CA certicate, a client certi cate and a client private key (contact your network administrator).
2. Go to Setup > System O ptions > Security > IEEE 802.1X and upload the CA certicate, the client certicate and the
client p

can be used with the Axis product:
Server/Client certicates - to authenticate the Axis product
CA certicates - to authenticate peer certicates, for example the certicate of an authentication server in case the Axis product is
connected to an IEEE 802.1X protected network.
Note
Installed certicates, except preinstalled CA certicates, will be deleted
if the product is reset to factory default. Preinstalled
CA certicates that have been deleted will be reinstalled.
A Server/Client certicate can be self-signed or issued by a Certicate Autho rity (CA). A self-signed certicate offers limited
protection and can be used before a CA-issued certicate has been obtained.
To install a self-s ign e d c e rticate:
1. Go to System Options > Security > Certicates.
2. Click Create self-signed certicate a nd provide the requested information.

NAT traversal (port mapping) for IPv4
A network router allows devices on a private network (LAN) to share a single connection to the Inte rnet. This is don e by for wa rding
network trafc from the private network to the “outside”, that is, the Internet. Security on the private network (LAN) is increased
since m ost routers are pre-congured to stop attempts to access the private network (LAN) from the public network (Internet).
Use NAT traversal when the Axis product is located on an intranet (LAN) and you wish to make it available from the other
(WAN) s ide of a NAT router. With NAT traversal properly c on gured, all HTTP traf c to an external HTTP port in the NAT router
isforwardedtotheproduct.
NAT traversal is congured under System Options > Network > TCP/IP > A dvanced .
Note
For NAT traversal to w ork, this must be suppor
ted by the router. The router must also supp ort UPnP
TM
.
The router has many diffe re nt names: “NAT router”, “Network router”, “Internet Gateway”, ”Broadband router ”, “B roa dband
sharing device” or “Home rewall” but the essential purpose of the device is the same.
Enable/Disable - W hen enabled, the Axis product attempts to congure po rt mapping in a NAT router on your network, using UPnP
TM
.
Note that UP nP
TM
must be ena
bled in the product (see System Options > Network > UPnP).
Use man ually selected
NAT router - S elect this option to manually select a NAT router and enter the IP address for the rou ter in
the eld. If no router is specied, the pro duct a utomatically searches for NAT routers o n your network. If more than one ro uter is
found, the default router is selected.
Alternative HTTP port - Select this option to manually dene an external HTTP port. Enter the port num ber in the eld. If no port is
entered he
re, a port numbe r is automa tically selected when NA T traversal is enabled.

Performance Considerations
When settings up your system, it is impo rtant to con sider how various setting s and situations will affect performance. Some facto rs
affect the amount of bandwidth (the bit rate) required , others can affect the frame rate, and some affect both. If the load on the
CPU reaches its m ax im um , this will also affect the frame rate.
The following factors are among the most important to c onsider:
High image resolution and/or low er compression levels resu lt in images containing more data. Bandwidth affecte d.
Access by large numbers o f Motion JPEG and/or unicast H.264 clients. Bandwidth affected.
Simultaneous viewing of different streams (resolution, compression) by different clients. Effect on frame rate and bandwidth.
Accessing Motion JPEG and H.264 video stream s s imu ltane ously. Frame rate an d ba ndwidth affected.
Heavy usage of event settings affect the product’s CPU l oad. Frame rate affected.
Heavy netw ork utilization due to poor i nfra structure . Bandwidth affected.
Viewing on poorly performing client computers lo wers perceived performance. Frame rate affected.
