Troubleshooting
Engine lacks
power or is not
running smoothly
Choke not set to RUN. Verify choke lever is fully set to RUN.
Throttle lever not set to FAST
(rabbit).
Verify throttle lever is fully set to FAST (rabbit).
Dirt air filter(s). Inspect air filter(s). Change air filter(s). See Maintaining
Air Filter(s).
Dirty or damaged spark plug. Inspect spark plug. Change spark plug if necessary. If
spark plug is oily: remove spark plug, hold a rag over
spark plug hole and pull starter handle several times to
blow out any oil in cylinder, then wipe off spark plug and
install.
Degraded or stale fuel. Change fuel. Add fuel stabilizer for fuel that will not be
used for a month or longer.
Dirty or degraded engine oil. Inspect oil and change if necessary. See Changing
Engine Oil.
Dirty or damaged cooling fins. Verify cooling fins are clean and free of debris. Clean as
needed. Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Engine smokes
Incorrect oil level. Verify oil level. Fill or drain as necessary.
Unit not level. Verify unit is level.
Dirty or clogged air filter(s). Inspect air filter(s). Change air filter(s). See Maintaining
Air Filter(s).
Incorrect engine oil. Verify engine oil is suitable for conditions. Drain and fill if
necessary. See Engine Fluid Requirements.
Dirty or damaged cooling fins. Verify cooling fins are clean and free of debris. Clean as
needed. Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Shredding and
chipping action too
slow
Dull or damaged chipper blade. Sharpen or replace chipper blade. Contact an IASD if
necessary.
Excessive vibra-
tion
Dull or damaged chipper blade. Sharpen or replace chipper blade. Contact an IASD if
necessary.
Hammermill is out of balance. Inspect for any missing or broken hammers or spacers.
Replace hammers or spacers if necessary. Contact an
IASD if necessary.
Incorrectly seated chipper blade Loosen chipper blade mounting screws, reset chipper
blade, and tighten screws. Contact an IASD if problem
persists.
Material vibrates
excessively when
chipping
Dull or damaged chipper blade. Sharpen or replace chipper blade. Contact an IASD if
necessary.
Debris builds up in
cutting chamber
Excessive wet/green material. Alternate shredding dry material with wet/green material.
Shred a wood stick of up to 1 in (2.54 cm) diameter to
clean out the build-up.
