Troubleshooting
Problem Cause Correction
Recoil will not pull
out or is difficult to
pull
Clogged or dirty chipper chute,
shredder hopper, or discharge
opening.
Remove unprocessed material from chipper chute and
shredder hopper, and remove any built-up debris in dis-
charge opening.
Oil compression lock in cylinder. Remove spark plug, hold a rag over the spark plug hole
and pull starter handle several times to blow out any oil in
the cylinder. Clean spark plug and install.
Broken or jammed starter handle
or recoil.
Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Engine will not
start
Incorrect oil or fuel level. Verify oil and fuel levels. Fill or drain as necessary.
Fuel shutoff set to OFF. Verify fuel shutoff is set to ON.
Spark plug wire unattached. Verify spark plug wire is attached. Attach if necessary.
Dirty air filter(s) Change air filter(s). See Maintaining Air Filter(s).
Degraded or stale fuel. Change fuel. Add fuel stabilizer for fuel that will not be
used for a month or longer.
Incorrect throttle or choke set-
tings.
Verify throttle and choke settings, adjustment, and travel.
Dirty or damaged spark plug. Inspect spark plug. Change spark plug if necessary. If
spark plug is oily: remove spark plug, hold a rag over
spark plug hole and pull starter handle several times to
blow out any oil in cylinder, then wipe off spark plug and
install. See Maintaining Spark Plug. Contact an IASD if
problem persists.
Incorrect spark timing or faulty
ignition system.
Contact an IASD.
Carburetor not primed. Pull start handle to prime carburetor.
Carburetor needle stuck. Gently tap side of carburetor float chamber with screw-
driver handle. Contact an IASD if problem persists.
Excessive fuel in chamber. Set choke to RUN position. Remove spark plug and pull
start handle several times to air out chamber. Install
spark plug and set choke to START.
Dirty fuel passageways. Clean out fuel passageways using fuel additive.
Cylinder not lubricated after long-
term storage.

Valves or tappets not adjusted or
stuck.
Contact an IASD.
Engine makes
hissing noise
when trying to
start
Loose cylinder head or damaged
head gasket.
Contact an IASD.
Loose or damaged spark plug. Tighten or replace spark plug.
