CLEANING DECK
Cleanundersideof the mowerdeck once a seasonto preventbuild-up
of grassclippingsor otherdebris. Followstepsbelowfor thisjob.
1. Disconnectsparkplugwire.Runengineuntilit stopsfrom lack of
fuel.
2. Tip mowersothat it restson the housing,keepingthe mufflerside
down.Referbackto Figure13.Holdmowerfirmly.
Nevertip the mowermorethan 900inany directionanddo not leave
the mowertippedfor any lengthof time. Oil candraininto the upper
partof the enginecausinga startingproblem.
3. Scrapeandcleantheundersideofthedeckwithasuitabletool.Donot
spraywithwater.
IMPORTANT:Donot usea pressurewasheror gardenhoseto clean
yourunit. These maycausedamageto bearings,orthe engine.The
useof waterwill resultin shortenedlife and reduceserviceability.
4. Putthe mowerbackon itswheelsonthe ground.

BLADE CARE
Whenremovingthe cuttingbladefor sharpeningor replacement,
protectyour handswitha pairof heavyglovesor use a heavy ragto
holdthe blade.
Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterfor cracks,especiallyif you
strikea foreignobject. Replacewhennecessary.Followthe steps
belowfor bladeservice.
1. Disconnectsparkplugbootfrom spark plug.Turnmoweron its
side makingsurethat theair filterandthecarburetorare facing
up.
2. Removethe boltand the blade bell supportwhich holdthe blade
andthe bladeadapterto theengine crankshaft.SeeFigure15.
3. Removebladeandadapterfromthe crankshaft.
4. Removebladefromthe adapterfor testingbalance.Balancethe
bladeon a roundshaft screwdriverto check.Removemetalfrom
the heavyside untilit balancesevenly.Whensharpeningthe
blade,followthe originalangleof grind.Grindeachcuttingedge
equallyto keepthe bladebalanced.
An unbalancedbladewill causeexcessivevibrationwhen rotatingat
highspeeds.It may causedamageto mowerand couldbreakcausin(
personalinjury.
5. Lubricatetheenginecrankshaftandthe innersurfaceof the blade
adapterwith lightoil. Slidethe bladeadapterontothe engine
crankshaft.Placethe bladeon the adaptersuch that the sideof
the blademarked"Bottom"(orwith part number)facestheground
whenthe moweris in the operatingposition.Makesurethatthe
bladeis alignedandseatedon thebladeadapterflanges.
6. Placeblade bell supporton theblade.Align notcheson the blade
bellsupportwithsmallholesin blade.
7. Replacehex boltandtightenhex boltto torque: 450 in. Ibs.rain.,
600 in. Ibs.max.
Toensuresafeoperationof yourmower,periodicallycheckthe blade
boltfor correcttorque.
