Check Engine Oil
Checkoil levelbeforeeachoperation.Besureoil levelis maintained.
1. Checkthe oil with the enginestoppedand level.
2. Removethe oil fill dipstickandwipeit clean.
3. Insertandtightendipstick.Removeitto checkthe oil level.
4. If the oil levelisnear or belowthe lowerlimitmarkonthe dipstick,
removethe oil fillercap/dipstick,and fill with the recommendedoil
to the upperlimitmark.Do not overfill.
5. Reinstallthe oil fill dipstick.
Change Engine Oil
Gasolineand its vaporsare extremelyflammableand explosive.
Fireor explosioncancausesevereburnsor death.
Changeengineoil after thefirst fivehoursof operation,andeveryfifty
hoursor once a seasonthereafter.
lWhen drainthe oil fromthe oil fill the fuel tankmustbe
you top
tube,
emptyor fuel canleak outand resultin a fire or explosion.Toempty
the fuel tank, runthe engineuntilitstopsfrom lack of fuel.
1. Withengineoffbutstillwarm,disconnectthesparkplugwireandkeep
itawayfrom the spark plug.
2. Placea suitablecontainernextto the engineto catchthe usedoil.
3. Removethe oil fill dipstickanddraintheoil intothecontainerby
tippingtheenginetowardthe oil fillerneck.See Figure13.
Usedoilisa hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
IDonot discardwithhouseholdwaste.Checkwithyourlocalauthori-
_tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities.
4. Withthe enginein a levelposition,fill tothe upperlimit markon the
dipstickwiththe recommendedoil.
Runningthe enginewitha lowoil levelcan causeenginedamage.
5. Reinstallthe oil fill dipsticksecurely.
Clean Engine
Dailyor beforeeveryuse,cleangrass,chaffor accumulated
debrisfromengine.Keeplinkage,spring,andcontrolsclean.
Keepareaaroundandbehindmufflerfreeof any combustible
debris.
Keepingenginecleanallows air movementaroundengine.
Enginepartsshouldbe keptcleanto reducethe riskof overheat-
ingandignitionof accumulateddebris.
Do not usewaterto cleanengineparts.Watercouldcontaminatefuel
system.Usea brushor dry cloth.

LUBRICATION
Blade Control
Lubricatepivotpointsonthe bladecontrolat leastoncea seasonwith
light oil.This control mustoperatefreelyinbothdirections.See Figure
14.
Wheels
Lubricatethe wheelsat leastoncea seasonwithlight oil (ormotoroil).
Ifwheelsare removedfor any reason,lubricatesurfaceof the pivot
arm andinnersurfaceof the wheelwith lightoil. SeeFigure14.
Side Discharge Cover
Lubricatethe torsionspringsandpivotpointsonthe sidedischarge
coverperiodicallywith lightoil to preventrust. See Figure14.
