Installation Instructions (cont'd)
Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve
_WARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provided
with a combination temporature-pressures relief valvecertified
_ya nationally recognized testing laboratory that maintains
_riodlc inspec_on of production of listedequipment or mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
Automatic GasShutoff Devicesfor Hot Water SupplySystems,
and the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
ments of ASME. If replaced, the valve must meet the require-
mentsof local cedes, but not lessthan a combination tempera-
ture and pressurerelief vah_ certified asmeeting the require-
ments for ReliefValvesand Automatic Gas Shutoff Devicesfor
Hot Water SupplySystems,ANSI 7.21.22by a nationally recog-
nized testing laboratory that maintains pededic inspectionof
productiono{ listed equipment or materiat_
The valve must be marked with a maxin_um set pressurenot
to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure of the
water heater (150 IbsJsq.in.) and a dischargecapacity not less
than the water heater input rate asshownon the model rating
! plate. (Electric heaters - watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal
I BTU/Hr rate.)
Your localjurisdictional authority, while mandating the useof a
temperature-pressure relief valve complyingwith ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may require a valve model different from the one
furnishedwith the water heater
Compliance with suchlocal requirements must be satisfiedby
the installer or end user of the water heater with a locallypre-
scribed temperature-pressure ralief valve installedin the desig-
nated opening in the water heater in placeof the factory fur-
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperation of the water heater, the relief valvemust not
be removed from it'sdesignated openingor plugged.
The temperature-pressurerelief valve must be installeddirectly
intothe f'_tiagofthe water heater designatedfor the relief valve.
Position the valve downwardand providetubing sothat any dis-
charge wifl exit only within 6 _nchesabove, or at any d_stence
below the structural floor Be certain that no contact ismade
with any liveelectricalpart. The dischargeopeningmust not be
blockedor reduced in size under any circumstance_ Excessive
tength, over 30 feet, or use of more than fo_urelbowscan cause
restriction and reduce the dischargecapacityofthe valve.
No valveor other obstructionisto be placedbetween the relief
valveand the tank. Do not connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunlessa 6" air gapisprovided.Topreventbodilyinjury,haz-
ard to life, or property damage, the relief valve must beallowed
to dischargewater in quantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.If
the dischargepipe isnot connectedto a drainor other suitable
means,the water flowmay causeproperty damage.
The DischargePipe
Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of the
valve,or haveany reducing couplingsor other restrictions.
Must not be pluggedor blocked.
Mustbe ofmaterial listedfor hotwater distribution.
Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of beth
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Mustterminate at an adequate drain.
Must not have anyvalve between the relief valveandtank.
AWARNING
The tempera_:'ure-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at least once a year. Caution should be taken to
er-_ure that (I) no one is in front of or areund the outlet of
the temperature-pressure retief valve dischargeline, and (2)
the water manually discharged will not cause any bodily
injury or property damage because the water may be
extremelyho_
if after manually opera_ng the valve, it fails to completely
reset and continues to release _ immediately close the
cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining
instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure relief
valvewith a new one.
