BASIC OPERATION OF THE TABLE SAW
A table saw can be used for straight-linecutting
operationssuch as crosscutting,ripping,mitering,
beveling,and compoundcutting.Itcan make dado or
moldingcutswith optionalaccessories.
The three-prongplug mustbe pluggedintoa match-
ingoutletthat is propeityinstalledand grounded
accordingto all localcodes and ordinances.Improper
connectionofthe equipmentcan resultin electdc
shock.Check with an electricianor service personnel
if you are unsure about propergrounding, Do not
modifythe plug;if itwill notfit the outlet, have the
correctoutletinstalledby a qualifiedelectrician.Refer
tothe Electricalpage of this manual.

CAUSES OF KICKBACK
Kickbackcan occurwhen the blade stallsor binds,
kickingthe workpieceback towardyou with great
force end speed, if yourhands are near the sewblade,
they may be jerked loose fromthe workpieceand may
contactthe blade. Obviously, kickbackcan cause
seriousinjury, and it iswell worthusing precautionsto
avoidthe risks.
Kickbackcan be caused by any actionthat pinches
the bladein the wood, such as thefollowing:
• Makinga cut with incorrectblade depth
• Sawingintoknots or nailsin the workpiece
• Twistingthe woodwhilemakinga cut
• Failingto supportwork
• Forcinga cut
• Cuttingwarpedor wet lumber
• Usingthe wrongblade for the type ofcut
• Not following correct operatingprocedures
• Misusingthe saw
• Fai{ingto usethe ant'vkickback pawls
• Cutting witha dull, gummed-up, or improperlyset
blade
AVOIDING KICKBACK
• Always use the correct blade depth setting. The
top of the blade teeth shouldclear the workpiece
by 1/8 in. to 1/4 in.
• Inspectthe work for knotsor nailsbeforebeginning
a cut. Knockout any looseknotswitha hammer.
Never saw intoa loose knot or nail.
• Always use the rip fence when ripcuttingand the
mitergage when crosscutting.This helpsprevent
twisting the wood in the cut.
• Always use clean, sharp, and properly-set blades.
Never make cutswith dull blades.
• To avoidpinchingthe blade,supped the work
properlybeforebeginning a cut.
• When making a cut, usesteady, evenpressure.
Never force cuts.
• Do notcut wet or warpedlumber.
• Always hold yourworkpiecefirmlywithbothhands
or with pushsticks.Keep yourbodyin a balanced
positionto be ready toresistkickbackshouldit
occur. Never stand directlyin line withtheblade.
• Use the dghttype ofbladefor thecut beingmade.
CUTTING AIDS

Pushsticksare devices used for safelypushinga
workpiecethroughthe blade insteadof usingyour
hands. They can be made in varioussizes and
shapes from scrap woodto usein a specificproject.
The stickmustbe narrewet than the workpiece,witha
90" notchin one end and shapingfor a gripon the
other end.
A pushblockhas a handle fastened by recessed
screwsfrom the underside,Use iton non-through
cuts.
_IL CAUTION: Be sure the screwis recessedto
avoiddamagingthe saw or workpiece.

A featherboard is usedwhen itis notpracticalto use
the miter gage, usuallydue to the size ofthe
workpieca.The end isangled, witha number ofshort
kerfstogive a friction hold on theworkpiece.Use a
C-clamp to lock it in place on the table. Test that it
could resist kickback.
