Check Engine Oil
1. Checkoil beforeeachuse. Stopengineandwaitseveralminutes
beforecheckingoil level.Withengineon levelground,the oil must
beto FULLmarkon dipstick.
2. Referto the Assemblysectionof thismanualfor instructionson
checkingthe oil.
Change Engine Oil
Refertotheviscositychart(Figure24)foroilrecommendations.Do
notover-fill.Usea 4-stroke,or anequivalenthighdetergent,premium
qualitymotoroilcertifiedto meetorexceedU.S.automobilemanufac-
turer'srequirementsforserviceclassificationofa minimumlevelSF
orSG(higherletterratingsareacceptablesuchas SJ,SLandSM
grades).Motoroilwilldisplaythisdesignationonthecontainer.

NOTE: Donot use non-detergentoil or2-strokeengineoil. Itcould
shortentheengine'sservicelife.
Changeengineoil after thefirst five to eight hoursof operation,
andeveryfifty hoursor every seasonthereafter.Changeoil every
twentyfivehourswhenoperatingengineunderheavyloador in
hightemperatures.
To Drain Oil
Usedoilis a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly
IDonot discardwith householdwaste.Checkwith yourlocalauthori-
[tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities.
Beforetippingengineor equipmentto drainoil, drain fuel fromtank by
runningengineuntilfuel tankisempty.
Usedmotoroilmaycauseskincancerifrepeatedlyleftincontactwith
theskinforprolongedperiods.Althoughthis isunlikelyunlessyouhandle
lusedoilonadailybasis,it isstilladvisabletothoroughlywashyourhands
[withsoapandwateras soonas possibleafterhandlingusedoil.
1. Drainthe fuel fromthe tankby runningthe engineuntilthe fuel
tankis empty. Be surefuelfill cap is secure.
2. With engine OFFbut stillwarm,disconnectsparkplugwireand
keep it awayfromsparkplug.
3. Removeoil drainend cap locatedat the baseof the engine,and
drainoil intoan appropriatereceptacle.See Figure25.

4. Replaceandtightenthe oil drain end cap.
5. Whenengineisdrainedof all oil, placeenginelevel.Refillwith
approximately20oz.of fresh oil. Fillto FULLline on dipstick.
Donot overfill.Referto CheckEngineOil inthis SERVICE&
MAINTENANCEsection.
6. Replacesparkplugwire beforestarting.
LUBRICATION
Afterevery10operatinghours,oil or greasethe lubricationpoints.Use
clean lubricatingoil (#30 weight motoroil is suitable)andcleangeneral
purposegrease(greasecontaininga metal lubricantis preferred,if
available).
Removethe tinesand cleanthe tineshaft. Use a file or sandpa-
perto gently removeany rust, burrsor roughspots(especially
aroundthe holesin the shaft).Applygreaseto the endsof the
shaft beforeinstallingthetines.
Removethe beltcover and lubricateall the pivotpointsand
linkageswitha lightcoat of oil. Keepthe beltsfreeof lubrication.
The chaincaseis pre-lubricatedand sealedat thefactoryand
requiresnomaintenance.
HARDWARE
Checkfor looseor missinghardwareafterevery10operatinghours
andtightenor replace-- as needed-- beforereusingthe tiller.Be
sureto checkthe screwsunderneaththe tiller hoodthat securethe
transmissioncoverand the DepthRegulatorLeverto the transmission.
