DFT Installation Instructions
Appendix
A) Installations Under Tiled Showers
Cables can be installed in tiled showers or other bathroom-like areas, although it is recommended
that you check with your local electrical inspector first to verify that this application is allowed in your
jurisdiction Waterproof membranes are usually used in these areas and in other areas where large water
spills may occur These membranes are typically composed of a waterproof thin film (max 0080” thick)
These membranes can be used in conjunction with the Warm Tiles systems by laying the cable on the
floor first, then covering with a scratch coat of cement-based underlayment The waterproof membrane
is then installed on top of the scratch coat, and the flooring completed in the usual manner Heat from
the cables, which typically operate at a temperature of about 104 °F (40 °C) will usually not aect
moisture barriers, consult with the manufacturer to be certain
B) Installations With Uncoupling Membranes
Uncoupling membranes are used to separate the tiling layer from substrate and therefore, help prevent
the formation of cracks in tile and stone floors In many cases the uncoupling membranes are pre-made
with channels that allow for quick and easy installation of heating cable within the membrane These
uncoupling membranes eliminate the need to use the cable strapping accompanying the cable sets
DFT cable may also be installed in conjunction with many of these membranes Follow the installation
instructions below when installing the DFT cable in applications where uncoupling membrane is utilized
!
CAUTION
Use only uncoupling membranes that are rated for 90°C or greater and are approved
by the manufacturer for having heating cable installed within them If you are unsure about
the membrane’s rated temperature or ability to accommodate heating cable, please consult with
the membrane’s manufacturer
Prepare Uncoupling Membrane
A) Follow instructions “Installing Electrical Connection Box (ECB)” above
B) Follow instructions “Installing Uncoupling Membrane” below
C) Follow instructions “Verifying Size of Heated Area“ and “Planning Floor Installation” above
D) Skip instructions “Installing Plastic Strapping” above and replace with instructions “Prepare
Uncoupling Membrane for Cable Insertion” below
E) Follow instructions “Verifying Resistance of Heating Cable and Sensor” and “Routing
Cold Lead” above
F) Skip instructions “Installing Cable” above and replace with instructions “Lace Cable Through
Uncoupling Membrane” below
G) Follow the remaining instructions after the “ ‘HALF OF CABLE’ Marker” section above
Installing Uncoupling Membrane
Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the uncoupling membrane This typically
requires a base layer of mortar to be applied to the floor and then the membrane immediately placed
onto the floor over the mortar Do not apply top layer of mortar over membrane at this time Allow base
layer of mortar to dry
