Both offer excellent performance for soundbars. For bigger surround systems (7 channels or more) optical is not sufficient, but for 5.1 or less (including soundbars) both will work well. The primary advantage of HDMI connection (ARC) is the ability to control a soundbar using your TV remote, thanks to CEC passthrough (consumer electronic control). For this soundbar, both HDMI and optical will offer similar performance.
