TheFDAbelongstoaninteragencyworkinggroupofthefederalagenciesthathave
responsibilityfordifferentaspectsofRFsafetytoensurecoordinatedeffortsatthefederal
level.Thefollowingagenciesbelongtothisworkinggroup:
• NationalInstituteforOccupationalSafetyandHealth
• EnvironmentalProtectionAgency
• OccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministration
• NationalTelecommunicationsandInformationAdministration
TheNationalInstitutesofHealthparticipatesinsomeinteragencyworkinggroupactivities,
aswell.
TheFDAsharesregulatoryresponsibilitiesfortabletswiththeFederalCommunications
Commission(FCC).AlltabletsthataresoldintheUnitedStatesmustcomplywithFCCsafety
guidelinesthatlimitRFexposure.TheFCCreliesontheFDAandotherhealthagenciesfor
safetyquestionsabouttablets.
TheFCCalsoregulatesthebasestationsthatthetabletnetworksrelyupon.Whilethese
basestationsoperateathigherpowerthandothetabletsthemselves,theRFexposures
thatpeoplegetfromthesebasestationsaretypicallythousandsoftimeslowerthanthose
theycangetfromtablets.Basestationsarethusnotthesubjectofthesafetyquestions
discussedinthisdocument.
