Philips 42PFL5907/F7 Questions and Answers

#1 Why are some off-air channels now missing from my Philips TV?

A. Some channels were moved to a different spectrum within the network, as a part of the U.S. government repackaging OTA initiative. To regain your channels, you need to rescan your TV for local channels.

How do I rescan for local channels?
A. Please refer to your televisions user manual. This process is easy to perform; however, it may take some time as the TV will scan all possible frequencies to find available channels. The section of the user manual will specifically mention installing and/or searching for channels.

This process may vary depending on your model, but see below for the sequence of steps involved.

When complete you will see a list of channels installed and available in your area.
What is a government repackaging OTA Initiative?
A. The U.S. government is auctioning off different spectrums of local airwaves which is triggering a “repack” of the spectrum in the coming months in various markets. This means that channels are being moved and consolidated into specific bands of spectrum so that large blocks of the spectrum can then be auctioned off for other data providers to use. In reality, some markets will have stations “repacked” several times. What this means is that if you are utilizing “off the air” channels, you simply need to rescan your TV channels to avoid losing stations that move to a new frequency. Note that this process will NOT affect you if you have a cable or satellite box connected to your television.

Where can I find out more about this process?
A. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is working with broadcast stations who will be part of the repack to try to educate consumers in those markets.

Their website contains a great deal of information and resources for those involved, and can be found here:

NAB Information on the Repack

When will I be affected?
A. The first phase of the repack starts September 14, 2018. There will be 10 Phases in total. Please see the following website for specific information for your zip code

#2 How can I watch 3D movies?

In order to watch 3D movies you need a 3D capable Blu-ray player, 3D capable TV, 3D glasses and a 3D movie or source. Currently Philips does not have any TVs that are 3D capable. We do have 3D Blu-ray players that will work with other 3D TVs.

#3 Why does my Philips HDTV take time to turn on?

There are a couple of reasons why modern HDTVs take time to turn on and show a picture (compared to old CRT & LCD TVs):

1/ Modern HDTVs are more like computers than simple electrical / electronic devices. They have processors, random access memory and reprogrammable flash memory which holds a small embedded operating system (firmware / software). Turning on a HDTV is just like booting up the operating system (e.g. Windows) on your computer.

2/ Newer [Energy Star] guidelines require Consumer Electronics manufacturers to maintain extremely low power consumption when a device is in stand-by mode to save electricity to reduce our carbon footprint. This forces HDTVs to do a complete boot up when turned on from stand-by.

#4 How can I program my Philips remote to work with my order devices?

Currently none of the remotes that come with Philips product can be used for other devices. Some products, when connected with HDMI, can be controlled with the TV remote. You must have Easylink enable on the TV set and be using a HDMI cable. The buttons that work with both devices is limited. Please consult the user manual of your TV for more information on Easylink and RC Forwarding.
