The Bluetooth version must be connected to your phone for the various features to synch. Therefore, you cannot leave your phone at home and use just the watch to track your exercise, listen to music, text, etc.

The LTE version can function stand alone (without your phone) because it has its own network connection. Using the LTE will require you to add a connection with your cellular carrier. ATT charges me $ 10 a month for the extra line for my watch. I can leave my phone at home and still text, listen to Spotify, track my exercise, etc.

If you purchased the Bluetooth version, yes only about 25 or 30 ft. If you bought the FTE version then definitely can use it w/o phone. It's a phone in and of itself. A separate phone/data account is required.
