The Video Doorbell does not need a base station as it connects directly to your 2.4Ghz home WiFi network. The Arlo Video Doorbell comes with a 3-month free trial of Arlo Smart, which enables users to store their videos in the cloud for up to 30 days. After the 3-month trial, user can continue storing their videos in the cloud with a paid subscription. Customers will always have the ability to receive instant alerts, live-stream video from their doorbell, receive a direct-to-mobile video call from a doorbell press, and play quick reply messages, even without a paid subscription plan.

It can use the original chime. It cannot use any chime and the install guide goes over that. And the chime transformer must output at least 16 volts. My chime was mechanical but it only output 10 volts. So I replaced the chime/transformer for a mechanical that outputs 16 volts and this doorbell works perfectly with it.

You can enable local storage on a Base Station or SmartHub and cameras that are connected to that base station will save their recordings to the connected storage drive, but the storage drive must be ejected and connected to a computer to be viewed. The library on your mobile app shows what is saved in the cloud. Arlo Video Doorbell requires an Arlo Smart subscription for content to be stored in the cloud.
