#1 where is the trigger or button you push. handle ?, side? its not shown. please help

Trigger is black bar in handle and is pulled with fingers, the button on side must be depressed with thumb to unlock bar/switch to get chain running. Blade moving motion occurs by pulling/pushing handle(orange) towards jaws, this blade movement allows you to grab stuff & not bend over also

#2 Can you cut small trees at ground level, or is this only useful to cut branches?

Yes you can cut small trees at ground level with the JawSaw

#3 how close can you cut to the trunk?

The chain stays inside the "claw" and doesn't extend outside of that safe area. If the trunk fits inside then you can cut it. If it doesn't fit then you cannot.
