• “Kibbeh” is derived from the Arabic word for “ball.” Kibbeh that’s rolled by hand
resembles small footballs, while in the meat grinder it comes out sausage-shaped.
• The Italian word for meatball is polpetta. In the Abruzzo region of Italy small meatballs,
or polpettine, are served in small bites the size of marbles.
• References to the “hamburger” being served as a sandwich date back as far as the
1880s, but the World’s Fair in St. Louis infamously claims it was the first to invent the
hamburger as well as the hot dog and iced tea.
• The first recorded recipe for meatloaf is from the 1870s, and it instructed you to add
pepper, salt, onion, bread and egg—the very same ingredients you’ll find in most
recipes today!
