Water Temperature
TomeetregulatoryrequirementsthetemperatureofstoredwaterMUST NOT belessthan60°C.Thethermostat
onyourwaterheaterisfactorypre-setto70°C.Thethermostatsettingcanbeadjustedbetween60°Cand70°C
byanelectricianorothersuitablyqualiedtradesperson.
WARNING
ThethermostatsettingmustonlybeadjustedbyanElectricianorothersuitablyqualiedtrades
person.
TheaccesscovertotheelementandthermostatmustonlyberemovedbyanElectricianorother
suitablyqualiedtradesperson.
SCALD HAZARDS
Hot Water can cause scalds.
Children, disabled, and the elderly are at the highest risk of
being scalded.
Feel water temperature before bathing or showering.
Scalds from hot water taps can result in severe injuries to
young children.
Scalds can occur when children are exposed directly to hot
water when they are placed into a bath which is too hot.

Testthetemperatureofthewaterwithyourelbowbeforeplacingyourchildinthebath,alsocarefullyfeel
waterbeforebathingorshoweringyourself.
Supervisechildrenwhenevertheyareinthebathroom.
Makesurethatthehotwatertapisturnedotightly.
Consider.....
Installingchildprooftapcoversorchildresistanttaps(bothapproacheswillpreventasmallhandbeing
abletoturnonthetap).
Installing tempering valves or thermostatic mixing valves which reduce the hot water temperature delivered
tothetaps.Yourlocalplumbingauthoritymayalreadyrequirethatthesebetted.Contactyourinstaller
orlocalplumbingauthorityifindoubt.
Never….
Leave a toddler in the care of another child. They may not understand the need to have the water
temperature set at a safe level.

Pressure & Temperature Relief (PTR) Valve
Thisvalveislocatednearthetopofthewaterheaterandisessentialforsafeoperation.
WARNING
DO NOT sealorblocktheoutletofthePTRvalveoritsdrainpipe.
DO NOT replacethePTRvalvewithonethathasahigherpressureratingthanisspeciedfor
the water heater.
ThePTRvalveshouldbecheckedforperformanceorreplacedatintervalsnotexceeding5years,ormorefrequently
inareaswithahighincidenceofwaterdepositsbyaqualiedperson.Theeasinggearmustbeoperatedatleast
onceeverysixmonthsormorefrequentlyinareaswithahighincidenceofwaterdeposits.
WARNING
Failure to do this may result in the water heater cylinder failing or under certain circumstances,
exploding.Waterdischargedwillbeveryhot.Exercisecaretoavoidscaldinjury.Ifthevalvedoes
notsealagainwhentheeasinggearisclosed,contactRinnaitoarrangeinspectionbyaqualied
person.
Itisimportantyouraiseandlowertheeasinggeargently.Ifthevalvedoesnot
dischargewaterwhentheeasinggearleverislifted,theremaybeaserious
problemandthepowersupplyinthemeterbox(theswitchmarked‘Water
heater’or‘hotwater’)ortheisolatingswitchinstallednearthewaterheater
mustbeswitchedoimmediately.ContactRinnaitoarrangeinspectionby
aqualiedperson.
ItisnormalforthePTRvalvetoreleaseasmallquantityofwaterthroughthedrainpipeduringheating.Ifthevalve
dribblesorleakscontinuously,tryeasingthevalvegearforafewseconds.Thismaydislodgeanyforeignmatter
andstopleakage.Ifleakagedoesnotstoptheremaybeaproblemasdetailedbelow:

Ifthereareheavyowsofwateruntilthewaterheateriscoldwhichthenstopsuntilthewaterreheatstheremay
beaseriousproblemandthepowersupplyinthemeterbox(theswitchmarked‘Waterheater’or‘hotwater’)or
theisolatingswitchinstallednearthewaterheatermustbeswitchedoimmediately.ContactRinnaitoarrange
inspectionbyaqualiedperson.

Ifthereisasteadyowforlongperiods,oftenatnight,itmaybeasaresultofthewaterpressureexceedingthe
designpressureofthewaterheater.ContactyourinstallingplumberasaPressureLimitingValve(PLV)may
berequired.
Expansion Control Valve (ECV)
An ECVis recommended in all geographical areas wherethe water supplyhas a tendency tocause scaling,
includingSouthAustraliaandWesternAustralia.LocalregulatoryauthoritiesmayrequirethatanECVbetted.
TheECVistobesuppliedandttedbytheinstaller.RefertothesectionWaterQualityformoreinformationon
scalingwater.
IfanECVistted,operatetheeasinggearatleastonceeverysixmonthstoremoveanydepositsandtoverify
thatitisnotblocked.
TheECVshouldbecheckedforperformanceorreplacedatintervalsnotexceeding5years,ormorefrequentlyin
areaswithahighincidenceofwaterdepositsbyaqualiedperson.
ItisnormalanddesirablethattheECVallowsasmallquantityofwatertobedischargedthroughthedrainpipe
duringtheheatingcycle.Ifthevalvedribblesorleakscontinuously,operatetheeasinggearforafewseconds.This
maydislodgeanyforeignmatterandstopleakage.IfleakagedoesnotstopContactRinnaitoarrangeinspection
byaqualiedperson.

ANODE
Thewaterheater isttedwitha sacricialanodetoextend it’slife. Itwillslowlydissipate whilstprotectingthe
cylinder.Thelifeofthewaterheatermaybeextendedbyarrangingforanauthorisedpersontoinspecttheanode
andreplaceitifrequired.Itisrecommendedthattheanodebeinspectedatleastevery5years.Thefactorytted
RinnaianodeisMagnesiumbased.Thisanodeissuitablewhenthetotaldissolvedsolids(TDS)contentinthe
watersupplydoesnotexceed600mg/L,whichisthecaseinmostareas.Inareaswherethetotaldissolvedsolids
(TDS)contentinthewatersupplyexceeds600mg/LtheRinnaialuminiumbasedanodeisrequired.
WATER QUALITY
Thewaterqualityofmostpublicsuppliesissuitableforthewaterheatingsystem.Thewaterqualityfrombore
wellsis generallyunsuitable forthe water heatingsystem. Referto the‘Warranty Conditions’ forwater quality
parametersandhowtheyaectthewarrantyconditions.Ifindoubtaboutthewaterquality,haveitcheckedagainst
theparameterslistedinthewarrantyconditions.Ifsludgeorforeignmatterispresentinthewatersupply,asuitable
strainerltershouldbeincorporatedinthewatersupplytothesystem.
OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW
(Howthehotwatersystemworks)
Single Element Model: A vitreous enamel lined steel cylinder stores water which is heated by a single
thermostaticallycontrolledheatingelement,locatedatthebaseofthecylinder.Thewaterheaterconnectsdirectly
tothemainswatersupply.TheheatingelementcanbeconnectedtoaContinuousorO-Peakelectricitysupply.
Thecontinuoussupplyisappropriatewhenthewaterheatercapacityislessthanthedailyusageofhotwater.The
O-Peaksupplyisappropriatewhenthewaterheatercapacityexceedsthedailyusageofhotwater.TheO-Peak
supplyallowsheatingonlyforsetperiodsandavolumeofwatersucientfordailyusageisheatedduringtheset
periodandstored.TheO-Peaksupplyisusuallycheaper.Electricitysupplytypesandtarisvaryaccordingtothe
localelectricityauthority.
Twin Element Model:Avitreousenamellinedsteelcylinderstoreswaterwhichisheatedbyatwinthermostatically
controlledheatingelements,oneelementislocatedatthebaseofthecylinder,whiletheotherislocatednearthe
top.Thewaterheaterconnectsdirectlytothemainswatersupply.Thebottomheatingelementheatsthewhole
contentsofcylinderandTopheatingelement(booster)onlyoperatesduringthehighdemandperiodstoheatthe
upperportionofthecontentsofthecylinder.Thetwoheatingelementsarewiredfornon-simultaneousoperation,
sothat onlyoneheating elementcanoperate atatime.The bottomheatingelement canbeconnected toan
O-Peakelectricitysupply,andthetopheatingelementtoacontinuouselectricitysupply.
Turning Water Heating System ‘OFF’
Ifthewaterheaterisnotgoingtobeusedforonlyafewdays,wesuggestyouleaveitswitchedon.Ifitisnecessary
toswitchothewaterheater,theswitchisusuallymarkedandlocatedintheelectricitymeterboxofthebuilding.
Turning Water Heating System ‘ON’
Switchontheelectricsupplytotheheatingelements.Theswitchisusuallymarkedandlocatedintheelectricity
meterboxofthebuilding.Waterheatingwillnowoccurasrequired.Itmaytakeanumberofhoursbeforehotwater
isavailable.
DRAINING
WARNING
DrainingMUST BE carriedoutbyaqualiedperson.
WatermaybeHOT during draining.
Drainthewaterheaterasfollows:
1. Isolateorturn‘OFF’thewaterheaterattheelectricitysupply.
2. Closethecoldwaterisolationvalveattheinlettothewaterheater.
3. Closeallhotwatertaps.
4. OperatethePTRvalveeasinggear-gently.OperatingthePTRvalveeasinggearwillrelievethepressure
inthewaterheater.
5. Undothecoldwaterinletunion.Attachahosetothewaterheatersideoftheunion.Lettheotherendofthe
hosegotoadrain.
6. OperatethePTRvalveeasinggearagain.Thisallowsairintothewaterheaterandwillresultinwaterdraining
throughthehose.

Is the electricity supply
connected?
Checkthattheisolatingswitchmarked“HOTWATER”or“WATERHEATER”atthe
meterboxisswitchedon.Checkalsothatanyisolatingswitchesinstallednearthe
waterheaterareswitchedon.
Checkthefuse orcircuitbreakermarked“HOTWATER” or“WATER HEATER”at
themeterbox.Repeatedfailureoffuseortrippingofcircuitbreakerindicatesafault
whichmustbeinvestigatedbyanauthorisedtradesperson.
IsyourunitaTwinElement
electricwaterheater?
Atwinelementmodel(non-simultaneous)musthaveacontinuouselectricitysupply
tothetopheatingelement.Checkthatthisisthecase.
Are you using more hot
waterthanyouthink?
Oftenitisnotrealizedhowmuchhotwaterisactuallyused.Thisappliesespecially
toshowering.Reviewhotwaterusage,especiallythetimetakenforshowering,and
investigatetheuseofowcontrolvalvesorWatersavingshowerroses.
Are water heater valves
dischargingexcessively?
Refertothesection“SafetyDevices”onpage6.
Thermostatsettings? Checkthetemperatureofhotwaterdeliveredwithathermometerplacedunderthe
closestoutlet(usuallythekitchensink)onanon-temperedhotwaterline.
This test should be done early in the morning after overnight electrical boosting
beforeanyhotwaterisused.Thetemperatureofthewaterdeliveredshouldbeat
least55°C(allowingforheatlossesinpipework).
If this is not the case, the temperature may need to be increased. Contact your
installerorRinnaitodiscussadjustingthethermostat.
Nowaterfromthehottap? Restrictioninthehottaporfailureofthecoldwatersupplytotheheater.
Checkforwaterowattheotherhottapsandthatthecoldwaterisolationvalveis
fullyopen.
HighElectricityBills
Ifyouthinkyourelectricity
bill is too high, check for
thesepossibilities.

Water heatervalvesmay bedischarging excessively.Refer tothe section“Safety

Theremaybehotwaterleakagesinhotwaterpipesortaps.Havethesecheckedand
rectiedbyaplumber.
Theremayhavebeenchangesinelectricitytarissinceyourlastbill.
PERIODIC MAINTENANCE & SERVICING
Ifoverowtrayanddrainaretted,itistheusersresponsibilitytohavethesecheckedperiodicallytoensurethere
arenoblockages.
TheusershouldoperatetheeasinggearoftheECVandPTRvalve(iftted)every6monthsasdescribedunder
“SafetyDevices”onpage6.
Rinnaiservicenetworkpersonnelarefullytrainedandequipped.IfyourRinnaiappliancerequiresservicingcontact
Rinnaiasperthedetailsonthebackpageofthismanual.Rinnairecommendsthatthiscommercialappliancebe
inspectedandservicedbyaqualiedpersonevery12months.
TheECVandPTRvalveMUSTBEcheckedforperformanceorreplacedbyaqualiedpersonatintervalsnot
exceeding5yearsormorefrequentlyinareaswherethewaterisclassiedasscalingwater.Refertoboththe
“Anode”and“WaterQuality”onpage7forAnodeselection,inspectionandmaintenancerequirements).
Iftheelectricsupplyconduittothewaterheaterisdamaged,itMUSTBEreplacedbyaqualiedpersoninorder

EnsurethePTRvalve,isolatingvalves,accesscovers,thermostatsandheatingelementshavesucientclearances

The water heater MUST BE installed in free standing mode on a level and stable base in a manner that is
acceptabletolocalauthorities.Avoidsituationsthatmayresultinpoolingofwateraroundthebaseofthewater
heater.
Wherepropertydamagecanoccurasaresultofwaterleakageinanindoorinstallation,thewaterheaterMUST

WATER QUALITY
Thewaterqualityofmostpublicsuppliesissuitableforthewaterheater.Waterqualityfromborewellsisgenerally
unsuitable.Refertothe‘WarrantyConditions’forwaterqualityparametersandhowtheyaectwarranty.Ifindoubt
aboutwaterquality,haveitcheckedagainsttheparameterslistedinthewarrantyconditions.
Ifsludgeorforeignmatterispresentinthewatersupply,asuitablestrainerorltershouldbeincorporatedinthe
watersupplytothewaterheater.
Scalingwaterisdenedashavingatotalhardnessinexcessof200mg/litre(expressedascalciumcarbonate)or
aSaturationIndexinexcessof+0.4.AreasthathaveascalingwatersupplyincludeSouthAustraliaandWestern
Australia.Inascalingwatersupply,calciumcarbonateandpossiblyothercompoundsaredepositedoutofthe
waterontoanyhotmetallicsurfacesandformascale.
InareasofscalingwateranECVMUSTBEttedonthecoldwaterlinebetweenthenon-returnvalveandthe
connectiontothewaterheatertoprotectthePTRvalveandthewaterheater.Localregulatoryauthoritiesmay

temperaturelimitationsofhotwater deliveredtoareasusedprimarilyforpersonalhygienesuch asbathrooms
andensuites.Thedeliverytemperaturemaybelimitedto45°Cforearlychildhoodcentres,primaryandsecondary
schoolsandnursinghomesorsimilarfacilitiesfortheyoung,aged,sickorpeoplewithdisabilitiesand50°Cforall
otherbuildings.ThesetemperatureswillreducetheriskofscaldinjuryandcanbeachievedbytheuseofaTLD,

RinnairecommendthatanapprovedTLDisttedintothehotwaterpipeworkfromthewaterheatertoareasused
primarilyforpersonalhygienesuchasbathroomsandensuitestoreducetheriskofscalding.

IsolationvalvesMUSTNOTbetteddirectlytotheappliance.Usedisconnectionunionsbetweenthewaterheater
andthevalvestoallowthewaterheatertobedisconnectedfrompipeworkatalaterdate.
Purgepipework toremove swarf andother foreign matterbefore nalconnection to thewater heater toavoid
damagetothewaterheater.

ThecoldsupplypipetoandhotwaterpipefromthewaterheaterMUSTBEinsulatedinaccordancewithlocal
regulatoryrequirementsandAS/NZS3500.4tooptimiseperformanceandenergyeciency.InsulationMUSTBE
weatherproofandUVresistantifexposed.
Thehotwaterpipefromtheoutletofthewaterheatershouldalsobeconguredintheshapeofa“heattrap”toaid
energyeciencyinaccordancewithlocalregulatoryrequirementsandAS/NZS3500.4.
Topreventdamagetothewaterheaterwhenattachingpipeclipsorsaddlestothejacket,itisrecommendedthat
selfdrillingscrewswithamaximumlengthof12mm areused.Ifdrillingisrequiredtakeextreme care NOT to
penetratetheinnercylinder.DamagetotheinnercylinderisNOTcoveredunderwarranty.
